These pictures were taken at three different locations in Okanagan Falls, BC, on August 27, 2003.

The Martin Mars ("Hawaii Mars") and five Bombardier (Canadair) 415s were helping to control what became known as the Vasseux Lake Fire.

Vasseux Lake is a few kilometers south of Okanagan Falls.
Okanagan Falls is a small town of 1,100 people at the South end of Skaha Lake, in the Okanagan Lakes chain.
It has a few stores and shops, several motels and has been a popular vacation spot for years.
The lumbering business is one major employer in the area.  Other growing industries are grapes for wine, and fruit growing.

These pictures were captured from three locations in Okanagan Falls, all within 150 meters of each other:
The parking lot of the IGA Food Market parking lot,
The beach park on Skaha Lake immediately north of the IGA, and
A narrow spit of land just north of IGA and which forms the east bank of the Okanagan River as it exits
the south end of Skaha Lake headed for the Columbia River.

This Martin Mars, one of only two (Phillipines Mars & Hawaii Mars) still flying out a total build of 12 beginning service in 1945, and the CL 415s had to fly (south to north) down a relatively narrow valley forming the river channel with valley sides up to 400 metres (1500 feet) high.

The CL 415s are modern and agile, whilst the Martin Mars requires a more measured hand and approach.

The Martin Mars carries 7,200 US gal (27,276 Litres) gallons of water in internal tanks filled by skimming the surface of the water.  In all dimensions this aircraft is huge completer with a 218 foot wing span.  Myfirst memories of this aircraft type was a child reading about them.  The purchase by the forest industry interests in British Columbia in the 1950's added to that interest.  Later, in my university days, I worked for a man who taught agricultural economics at the University of Alberta. During one conversation I discovered that he had been one of the original pilots when the Mars went into service in the mid 1940's.  His name was Eric Berg, a Nimitz, Texas boy, who after getting his PhD in economics after the war, went on to become one of the top agricultural commodity futures experts in North America, or so his colleagues told me.  He was too modest to make such a claim.  He was most proud of his time as a US Navy Pilot, both before and during his time on the Mars-type.  It was a Navy Plane.  Sadly, Eric died of heart disease in 1968.

The CL 415s carry 1,100 US gallons of water and also skim the surface of the water to re-fill.
