How TAT was developedI developed TAT in the course of my acupuncture practice working with allergies. Many patients had a particular moment of trauma related to a food, chemical, or other substance that kept the allergy in place. I had been working with Dr. Devi Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination technique when one day, after a nap, the importance of one particular acupuncture point that I hadn't been using came to mind. I tried it out on my next patient and got excellent results. I kept using the point -- actually two points, one located at each eye -- with great success. It was a useful treatment for allergies, emotional traumas and physical traumas. After a few months, I showed the technique to a patient who told me that his T'ai Chi master had showed him the use of those points plus one more located between and above the eyebrows -- again, focusing on the eye area. After a few months, while studying with a colleague who helps heal emotional stress by having patients do special exercises with the eyes, it occurred to me that perhaps adding acupuncture points at the occiput region (back of the head where the brain's vision center is) would enhance my treatments. It did. Steps I previously had to take in my protocol were dropped with this new addition of points at the back of the head.
Theory of TATMy basic theory is this: a trauma is a stuck moment that keeps causing stress. Saying 'No' in that original moment creates a tension because it really did happen and some part of you is still telling it 'No!'. In that moment of trauma, some part of you felt "I can't survive if this happens to me." So you said 'No' to it. This creates a duality and is called a yin-yang imbalance in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This means that you create "I'm over here and I'm keeping that trauma over there, away from me." Very stressful because the trauma isn't over there, it's really part of you. TAT is centered in your eyes. Acupressure is performed by the person with the trauma on acupuncture points that focus energy on the eyes. You are "re-viewing" the trauma now and whatever parts of you were saying 'No' now say 'Yes'. You can "see" that it is not a threat now. You'll likely feel some subtle shift in your energy as the trauma is accepted now. You will have dissolved the duality of self and trauma. The various symptoms you had were based on which part of your body was resisting that trauma. They'll relax and heal now.
About Tapas FlemingI am a licensed acupuncturist California. I completed my training in 1987 from Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica, California and continued advanced studies in the People's Republic of China. For the first few years of my practice, I specialized in detox treatments for people addicted to alcohol, drugs and nicotine. I worked with an alcohol halfway house, the California Parole Board's parolee program, a court-ordered drug abuse outpatient program, and in corporate stop-smoking programs while keeping up a general private practice. In the last three years of my practice, I specialized in allergy work using Dr. Devi Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique. In my late teens I began doing self-discovery work. I did a lot of emotional
trauma release work and learned and studied interpersonal
I think that TAT is so powerful because it is based on the spiritual reality expressed by the ancient tradition of India: Thou art That. Or by Pogo: "We have met the enemy and his is us." In other words, by trying to hold a trauma away from ourselves, we give it its power over us. When we truly, energetically, in fact realize it as a part of ourselves, it has no more energy. TAT accomplishes this. I do not think that TAT should be limited to professionals. Once you learn it, you will be able to empower your patients/clients/friends to do it themselves.
