Creating
Peace in the Face of Conflict and Fear The recent terrorist actions in the United States have shaken the entire world. Media images of destruction and death, pain and loss, have brought the trauma to the hearts and psyches of humanity around the globe. Many of us have felt shaken and emotionally unsettled in the days and weeks that have followed. How can we bring meaning to this conflict and pain? What can we, as individuals, do to support the healing and creation of a higher order of peace on our planet? How can our work with the Energy Psychotherapies help us to find some direction? The Energy Psychotherapies and research on the power of prayer and other healing modalities have introduced us to the concept of surrogate treatment and healing at a distance. Many of us have also worked with the concepts of treating birth trauma, childhood trauma, past lives or “entities” on other planes. Given the success of these treatments we have had to re-think our concepts of time, space and mind/body. One theory that supports the scientific basis of these healing effects is the model of “nonlocal mind”. As Larry Dossey suggests, “nonlocality, as currently conceived within science, implies infinitude within space and time….if mind is nonlocal, therefore it is omnipresent, eternal and immortal….At some level, nonlocal minds must merge, leading to the ancient idea of the Universal or One Mind” (Forward by Larry Dossey in Spiritual Healing. Scientific Validation of a Healing Revolution. Dan Benoir. Vision Publications, Southfield, MI 48034, 2001. Many of you will have received emails or read publications that suggest that we need to look at how the terrorist actions could be manifestations of non-local mind. In other words, rather than thinking of those who perpetrate acts of atrocity and hate as individuals, to consider them as acting out parts of the collective psyche of humanity - including yours and mine! Taking this premise to heart, I see two actions we can take that will make a significant contribution to Peace on Earth. The first is to acknowledge and heal myself in relation to my own acts of terrorism; towards self and others. The second is to connect to the beauty, joy and love that are LIFE and consciously choose to live in those places as often as I can. These actions will have an impact to raise the consciousness of the planet and promote peace because WE ARE ONE. The Energy Psychotherapies have assisted us in treatment and self-treatment of emotional distress related to a wide range of issues, including past trauma, anger, resentment and a myriad of core beliefs that limit our self-love, and love and acceptance of others. When we are in a state of emotional distress we affect the well-being of many around us. Therefore, as we find ourselves upset by the recent atrocities and filled with fear for our safety or anxieties over the potential of war and destruction, we have a responsibility to treat ourselves or seek treatment. With each issue we heal, present or past, we open ourselves to a greater experience of Peace Calm and Light (recently coined as PCL). As we live this state of inner harmony in our daily lives the ripples are felt by those around us and even those at a distance, because WE ARE ONE. Many people I have spoken with since the attacks have shared their experiences of emotional vulnerability. Even though we may not have been affected by the direct loss of loved ones we catch ourselves feeling waves of GRIEF. This grief signifies our connection on a much wider plane. We feel the GRIEF because WE ARE ONE. At times, I have found myself suddenly feeling guilty when I notice I have been immersed in moments of beauty or joy. Watching a young child fishing off the rocks at sunset, feeling bliss as I listen to favourite piece of music, sharing loving moments with a friend, I would catch myself and think ‘how can I be experiencing this pleasure when so many are suffering?’ As I recalled the concept of WE ARE ONE, I began to realize that while I have moments where I touch the GRIEF of humanity, I can also contribute to the JOY. As I live fully in the flow of LIFE, whether it is acknowledging the GRIEF or living the JOY I am contributing to humanity in the highest and finest way possible. I now feel impelled to find those places within myself more often and then sit in quiet state of compassion for the LIFE THAT WE ARE. In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, the
Dalai Lama suggested that the reason we are on this planet is to serve
each other and that it is ultimately in our own best interest to focus
on our ONENESS. “When we focus on our individuality humanity suffers. And
once humanity suffers, each one will also suffer”. Never has there been
a time in history when this statement has been more true. The social, emotional,
economic, and spiritual implications of the terrorist attacks on New York
city have been felt around the world. Our planet will never be the same.
With humility we must admit that knowledge, wealth and power do not bring
security or inner peace. It is our connection with others and the LIFE
itself that bring us ultimate peace. As we illuminate our inner places
of darkness and live with compassion for our self and others, we do make
a difference -
Wishing each of you Love and Light as you tread along on your journey of LIFE. Sincerely,
