Diamond Head - Squamish
The skiing around high point can often be very good, and over the years, has become increasingly popular. Here Chris Cooper cranks some turns in the powder on the north side of high point. Mt. Atwell is in the background.

Three Brothers Area (Manning Park)

Well, we got it together again! The advance party had established camp and we all met for our infamous Red Lobster AGM. The cigars were smoked, the rusty nails were passed around and the tent was decorated with working Christmas lights and sound effects! It was a great time, and a new member was officially recognized and welcomed in to the fold. He finally got the hear the secret Lobster chant! What a lucky guy! It must be noted that it was Dale's first time on backcountry skis, never mind it was his first time with a pack. Well done. Welcome to Lobsterdom!

Trip Reports

January 24 - Keith Rajala and Ken Williams went up to high point at Diamond Head. We even had to wear sunglasses! A great change after all our dismal weather in the Fraser Valley.

February 7 - Keith Rajala, Chris Cooper, and Ken Williams try to go up Diamond Head. The road at the entrance to the park was impassable due to heavy wet snow. Bulletin board "shelter" at the parking lot almost level with the snow pack. About 5ft. of snow in the last two weeks.

Niut Ski Trip at Spring Break

Dale with Niut Peak in the distance
Dale MacQuarrie, Ken Williams, Chris Cooper, Greg Stader, and I made a trip into the Chilkoten on Spring Break. We flew from Bluff Lake into an area just north of Niut Mountain. The protected northern slopes were great with beautiful powder snow. :-)

The Golden Triangle - Canadian Rockies

A special account by Dave Dixon of our cycle tour of the famous "Golden Triangle": a trip south from Golden to Radium B.C., then north-east to world famous Lake Louise Alberta, and then back west to Golden.

The picture of me was taken the morning we left the Marble Canyon campground and were approaching Vermillion Pass on our way to Lake Louise.

Monument 83 Cycle - Manning Park

 Mon83JonWheatley

Jon Wheatley and I took the camper van up to Manning Park and biked up the road to the Monument 83 border marker and fire lookouts. The last few kilomenters are unrelenting and certainly make for a good workout. It's about 16 km from where you park your vehicle to the lookout.

Besides having a good ride and supper in the pub, Jon and I drove up the switch back road opposite the Manning Park Lodge to a viewpoint to spend the night. No sooner had we parked than a blue van pulled up and started to unload some large unusual looking objects. Shortly we realized that two large telescopes were being set up! It was getting dark and the sky was clear and I was excited about the possibility of looking through the telescopes, but then I didn't want to presume. Very soon we learned that the people were warmly hospitable and seemed to enjoy sharing their knowledge and equipment. They were Ken Hewitt-White and his wife. Ken is the co-host of the Cosmic Highway program. I thought I recognized his voice! Anyway, we saw the ring nebula, globular clusters, the cat's eye nebula, and three galaxies in the same field! It was a special night that I will long remember.
