Golden Ears
I was going to Garibaldi high school
and one of our teachers, Dan Buss, sponsored our outdoor club.
He was good enough to take a bunch of us up the Golden Ears during
the fall. I remember some of us on the way up suffered from being
new to overnight hiking, and the fact that the trail was demanding.
We camped in two different spots along the wooded ridge just
before tree line. Someone lit off a flare in the lower campsite
before going to bed and I remember we wondered if there was trouble.
As it turned out, there wasn't. We were greeted with a wonderful
sunrise the next morning.
We gathered together in the morning
and made our way towards the top. Fred Plateel is in the picture
here.
Just before the summit we gathered
together and took a break. For some of us, hiking was quite new
and this hike was very demanding. I hope we all enjoyed a sense
of accomplishment. Thanks again to Dan and Joe Buss for chaperoning
us.
