In Ancient times, almost any condition or disability could be treated with advanced medicine. Healthy individuals could even be improved. Surgical procedures and wonder drugs were created which could grant near-superhuman strength, agility, or stamina; heal grievous wounds; even regrow organs. But for all their wondrous powers, most pre-Crash medical treatments are designed for use by humans. In many cases, high-tech procedures and pharmaceuticals can harm or even kill a mutant whose biology proves incompatible.
A mutant who receives any advanced medical treatment or uses any high-tech medicines designed for humans only must make a Fortitude save (base DC 15, but some mutations and talents can modify this) or suffer a random effect from the Medical Incompatibility Table (see below). If a character succeeds the save, the procedure or medicine affects them normally. Most incompatibility effects work like poisons, with an immediate initial damage followed later by secondary effects (which requires another Medical Incompatibility check to resist).
| d% | Effect | Initial Damage | Secondary Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01-05 | Death | Character is reduced to 0 hp | Character is killed |
| 06-10 | Paralysis | Character is paralyzed for 1d4 days | Character suffers permanent paralysis |
| 11-15 | Brain Damage | 1 Intelligence (permanent) | 3d6 Constitution |
| 16-25 | Nerve System Damage | 1 Dexterity (permanent) | Paralysis (2d6 hours) |
| 26-35 | Muscular Damage | 1 Strength (permanent) | 2d6 Strength |
| 36-50 | Creep Contamination | The character gains 1d6 Creep | |
| 51-80 | Ineffective | The treatment or medicine has no effect | |
| 81-95 | Diluted Effect | Normal effect is halved | |
| 96-00 | Increased Effect | Normal effect is doubled | |
Note: On a roll of 01-50, the treatment or medicine still works with regular effects - the mutant just suffers additional debilitating side effects due to their medical incompatibility.
Unlike the medicines and drugs of the Ancients, juju medicine is designed to be compatible with all types of creatures - mutant or otherwise. Any treatment or pharmaceutical listed as 'juju' is safe for use by all. Juju doctors are much more trusted in communities of mutants than even the best-equipped healer with high-tech meds.
A juju medicine bag serves the same purpose as a medical kit, but is comprised entirely of all-natural primitive-tech herbal components. Some characters may be able to create special juju 'healing potions', 'antitoxin potions', and other concoctions that replicate the effects of high-tech medical treatments.
