Port Shorts










Jason Margolis has directed over twenty-five shorts for Vancouver Film School's writing department, whose Portfolio Shorts program (formerly Web TV) combines professional production crew with student writers. Directors are allowed only four hours to shoot these three to five minute shorts.

Jason also directed and edited several short documentaries as an instructor for Vancouver Film School, including Candemonium: Canstruction In Vancouver (Doxa Film Festival), Bloody Mary: Myth Or Reality, Disposable Pets, and African Dance.

Tierheim (The Animal Shelter)








 


A paleontologist looking for a bone. A scientist looking for a soul. A blind woman looking for her dog. Inspired by German expressionism films such as Nosferatu and The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, Tierheim was the winner of the Best Film (out of 58 films) at the 4th annual Reel Fast 48 Hour Filmmaking Contest. Tierheim went on to play in film festivals such as Light Plays Tricks in Kingston and the Whistler Film Festval, and has been programmed in art galleries around North America.

Starring Shawn Bordoff, Sarah Hattingh, Johnny Cantiveros, Maureen Prentice, Stanley Katz, Lauchlin MacDonald, and Katarina Balalas, with Ari Solomon as the Doctor, and introducing Lucky Prentice as the Lost Dog.

Directed, edited and cinematography by Jason Margolis. Written by Jason Margolis and Stanley Katz based on ideas developed by the entire cast and crew. Produced by Stanley Katz. Production design by Sarah Hattingh, featuring original paintings by Lauchlin MacDonald.

Eddie becomes obsessed with Natalie, a young woman he’s seen in the park. He writes a play which casts her in the central role then sets out to entrap her with his written words. Intrigued by the stranger, Natalie agrees to read with him but her curiosity soon turns to terror as he tries to control her. In a desperate attempt to escape from him, Natalie rewrites the end of Eddie’s play and gains the upper hand.

After Shock was winner of a Directors Guild of Canada KickStart Award. It screened at numerous international film festivals, including the Vancouver International Film Festival, and was broadcast on "Cinema Canada" (CBC), "Perspectives Canada" (CBC) and the "Independent Eye" (Knowledge Network). Inspired by a true story of what happens from being in the wrong place in the wrong time, After Shock explores the psychological effects of a terrorist attack.


The cast included Matt Baram (Second City Toronto, "The Border"), Kelly Budnarchuk, Christian Mena (Rent, "Strange Frequency"), Erin Malin, Martin Budny ("DaVinci's Inquest"), Shannon Larson (Barbie Screams), and Katarina Balalas.
