Day 10 - Tuesday, May 13, 2003

This morning we can't venture to far from the hotel. We have to meet with our vacation representative, Anna, to get instructions on leaving Rhodes and getting back on the Triton. We don't meet with her until 11:00 am so we have a few hours to spend by the pool again (with everyone else waiting for her). We had a good nights sleep last night too. It cooled off a little and felt very nice. That's good because we have a big walking day ahead of us. We're going to walk from our hotel to the center of Rhodes Town. A trek of about 5 or 6 kilometers. We wanted to do it because there are a lot of nice things to see on the walk. We meet Anna, get our tickets for the ship, etc. and head out on our walk. About half an hour out we come across the cultivated walkway along the sea and Rhodes beaches. The walkway if nice with lots of flowers, the shore is pretty with its rocks and birds and occasional swimmer.

Rhodes Aquarium

We take several photos and walk down the beach. It's well past lunch and we look for a place to have a snack. As we wind through Rhodes we come across the gyros place we ate at a few days ago and have the gyros plate again. The Internet cafe is just two blocks away and we send away our last email. I was able to repair the floppy we broke yesterday and sent the photos on their way. We then headed back to the water to continue our walk where we left off. We walked along the public beach with its hundreds of colorful umbrellas and made our way to the Aquarium. They have the distinction of being the only aquarium below sea level (about ten feet or so). It was 3 euros per person and we were out of there in ten minutes. Not much to see or do. Small tanks, small fish, leaking roof, smelly place. But, hey, if you really, really, really, like fish you might enjoy this place. We continued our walk through Mandraki Harbour and back into town.

We bought so much stuff so far into the trip that we had to get another bag to haul it back home to Canada. We picked one up from one of the street vendors for only 12 euros. We took the bus back to the hotel and spent some more time by the pool. What is wrong with us? All this sitting around and enjoying life stuff. After our lounging we decided to go really crazy and took a nap in our room. Be still my beating heart. Oh look, time to eat again. We change and take a walk to the restaurant strip and eat at a place called Jason No.2. I had the grilled swordfish, July had the mixed souvlaki, I had a banana split and Greek coffee, July had some kind of sinful strawberry dessert. The whole thing worked out to 38 euros. The waiters were very funny for the whole evening and I tipped them well. It was a nice night out. We walked back to our room, packed our luggage for our departure tomorrow and went right to bed.
