The 6 Annual International Salish Sea Sea Pearl Regattas

Proas in Micronesia

British Columbia and Washington State by Wafarer, Sea Pearl, and Catalina 27

Panama Canal (coming soon)

When we were in Micronesia, I was fortunate to become friends with a former Chuukese navigator, the late Taun Pal, who told me many stories about canoe voyaging and Traditional Navigation .

Here's Linda waving from a proa (outrigger canoe) with Pohnpei's Sokehs Mountain in the background.
To learn about outrigger canoe sailing, see The flying proas of Kapingamarangi and Outrigger canoe racing in Kiribati, two articles and some pictures which first appeared in Messing about in Boats, a wonderful little magazine that comes out twice each month.  Proa Web Sites has lots of links about these amazing boats.
We began beach cruising in the Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound in this  Wayfarer sailing dinghy, Kestrel.  We sailed and camped throughout the region, having many amazing adventures.  I still miss the thrills but not some of the cold, wet trips.. Here you see Linda and me, with our friend Alan Keitt, racing home across Maple Bay in the next beach cruiser, our Sea Pearl 21, Kaselehlia. For many seasons we used the Sea Pearl for sailing and camping in the Gulf Islands and across the border in the San Juan Islands.  You can read about our meetings with other Sea Pearls, the Annual International Salish Sea Sea Pearl Regattas (AISSSPR) here.

Our newest boat is Diviner, a Catalina 27.  We have cruised in the Gulf Islands, the mainland coast and islands from Toba Inlet to Vancouver, and the San Juan Islands.  We enjoy the added mobility provided by the larger boat, the chance to anchor where there is no camping, and the cabin where we can escape from the rain.  But we miss the excitement and closeness to nature to be found cruising in a small open boat like the Wayfarer or the Sea Pearl.

Possibly the best cinnamon bun found at any boating destination in the world can be obtained at Holly B's Bakery on Lopez Island, WA. Have a look.
