The proof (is in the pudding)

I've been searching the net high and low to find some actual PROOF to back up everything I've said here, and so far I've found this email from a guy on
J-body.org:

"Im an electrical tech for AC Delco Heres the scoop. On many 2000 model GM cars there is so much computer stuff that we dont have easy placees to access it so the brains decided to run some busses and non accential functions through the cars stereo system. Some of you are correct and some dead wrong. the unit controls the idiot alarms for your keys and lights like SerVo stated, so if you disconnect the unit you lose these alarms THIS IS ALL YOU LOSE If you disconnect the stuff wrong or cut the wrong wires, (DON'T CUT WIRES) then it could cause a missinterpretation in the electrical system and cause other various items to malfunction thes being theft protection, air bags or even some lights these are called body control systems and yes it can and will void any waranty on these things so if you want to put in a new unit then do it just be carefull and remember GM want cover it!"

I also came across this post on J-body.org:

"I had a new haed unit installed and now my low-beam headlamps don't work (the high-beam indicator light won't go off either) and my drl's don'twork if I try to switch between high- and low- beam lights. Also, that stupid, annoying chime that warns of your every little move doesn't work (I kind of miss it). Please help if you have info."

Honestly, the only way I can see that happening is if the installer tapped into the DRL circuit looking for a +12V switched wire. Removing the factory deck will NOT affect your DRL's if done properly! I've contacted her and am awaiting more info!!

Doug Seybert, who once worked for Best Buy and whose father works for Delphi electronics (who MAKE the stereos) emailed me:

"I worked in the install bay for a few years and my father is working for 35 yrs in delphi and has a lot of knowledge on this, the only thing it controls is like you said and the other post that was there about idiomatic warninngs,  You were very correct when assessing the drl issue, i have tried this just to test out diff situations with cars of the j type and the only satisfactory switch power for the unit will be aftermarket wise is the ignition yellow or at the fuse panel.  Just thought i would let you know.  Lke the other posts on this site say, research and people who work there would know (gm meaning), so have no fear it can be done, thanks john for all the info and the site is the bomb... i have a 2001 z and i have done all the mods to it and have no probs whatsoever. NONE."
