How do I know so much about this all?
There isn't that much to know, really. I just did a little
bit of homework and refused to believe the stupid rumours!
First off, I didn't listen to GM. Their techs don't know
how to install aftermarket stereos.... they just read the
service manuals when they need to fix stuff. They don't
have any single car memorized (well, at least the techs I
know sure don't). When I went to GM asking about replacing
the factory deck, they said the oil light would stay on,
and I would have to replace the chime module along with
several other parts, to the tune of about $1000!! But when
I went to order those recommended parts, they didn't know
which ones to order! So obviously they were as useful as a
pile of dog crap.
Second, I didn't let the so-called 'professional'
installers screw me over. Talk to different shops... find
out who know the real deal on your car before you let them
mess with it. I'm not trying to say these guys don't know
what they're talking about.. but this Class 2 wiring is new
stuff! It takes a new way of thinking. You can't just cut
out the factory deck and plug in a new one wherever you
like. You have to take a few precautions first. Like
disabling the airbags. GM recommends it, but most shops
don't do it. Next, you don't touch the air bag wiring!
That's probably where the aig bag rumour came from in the
first place! Installers scared to disable the bags (not
part of training, I'll bet), maybe somone tried to use the
airbag wire (it's yellow!) to power the deck, and set off
the air bags? Who knows. But make sure you use a shop that
knows what they're doing.
Now, all that said, if you still need more info, feel free
to free to
email me. If you have
comments about this page, either positive or
negative,
email me! Or if you
work for GM or AC Delco and want to give me a high-paying
management job,
EMAIL ME ASAP! and last not
least...
Good luck with your stereo install!
