Branch # 9 Kootenay

Castlegar has a population of just over 7,000 people. The community is located on the banks of the Columbia River. The bench land is at the junction of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers.

The flatlands on the Columbia's east bank and between the two rivers was first occupied by the Doukhobors in 1908. The early communes involved planting of orchards, gardens, sawmills and small community industries. The original settlement lies in and near the current airport and some evidence of these early settlers is still present.
