Branch # 8 Merritt

Merritt has a population of 7,000 people, located on highway 5 it is 118 km from Hope and 108 km form Peachland in the Okanagan Valley. The Nicola valley is marked by the Nicola River and the town of Merritt lies at the confluence of the Nicola and Coldstream rivers. The Town of Merritt was established in 1906. The area is a center for some of the best cattle ranching in BC. In 1945 the last of the coal mines in this area closed down. It provided a base for later copper mining in the area and remains a lumbering center.
