Campbell Icefield, March 6-13 2004

Our group of 16 spent the week of March 6-13 at Campbell Icefield Chalet in the BC backcountry, returning after a great time in March 03, as shown in this short video. This year, a high avalanche hazard and some very warm temperatures limited our options somewhat, however, we still had fine skiing each day. These maps give an idea of the location.

We met the helicopter in Donald, north of Golden. A 10 minute flight took us to our home for the week, where we were met by:
Jesse and Christine de Montigny, chalet custodians, who had spent much of the season at Campbell. We enjoyed their company and found their intimate knowledge of the area to be very helpful. An ACMG Asst. rock guide, and soon to be ski guide, Jesse got to practice his considerable skills by offering to lead our group on some new (to us) routes. Here they are at the head of the Bluewater Glacier, with the white peak of Mt. Freshfield above the Campbell Icefield, in the background.
A view of the "living room" of the very comfortable lodge. This place has it all; loads of windows, plenty of space,a big kitchen where our team of gourmet chefs/skiers took turns making dinners and breakfast for the rest of the group, private bedrooms,a fine sauna, and new this year, hydro power, running water and a flush toilet! We certainly can't claim to have been roughing it.
Here we all are, photo by Jesse or Christine.Standing, left to right:Larry Fisher, Ena Spalding, Franz Dopf, Robbie Dopf, John Bargman, Steve Riggs, John Davies, Karen Fisher, John Alliston, Roy Scarisbrick. Kneeling:Brian Dechene, Jim Eickmier, Barb Davis, Joanne Riggs, Carol Guthrie, Betty Alliston.
After getting settled in, and spending some time refreshing rescue skills, we then skied the short distance to the ridge west of the chalet, enjoying a couple of short runs in the 30cm's new snow that had fallen the day before. The sun was fading fast as we skied back home.
The sun drops behind clouds gathering to the west, what will tomorrow bring?
