Calgary Mustangs Match Reports by Jason Kmet

August 26, 2004 -- Milwaukee Wave United 4 at Calgary Mustangs 2

The Calgary Mustangs closed out their 2004 with an inconsistent performance against Milwaukee Wave United.  Wave United, still in the playoff hunt, took advantage of the Calgary side's lapses and defeated the Mustangs 4 to 2.

Milwaukee started the game in fine fashion with a goal by Joe Hammes off a corner kick play in the opening minutes.

Calgary drew even in the 23rd minute when defender Mike Pavicic unexpectedly made a run from the back to the right flank and received an excellent pass.  He made no mistake and put the ball past Jim Larkin.

In the 32nd minute, Milwaukee's Johnny Torres made a great pass to teammate Jamar Beasley.  His strong shot beat Lutz Pfannestiel and Wave United regained the lead.  Beasley received a yellow card immediately after the goal for removing his shirt during his celebration.

Milwaukee had a good chance in the 35th minute when Calgary's defense broke down, resulting in a couple of Wave United players taking shots that did not quite find the mark.

Calgary nearly tied the game a minute later when Jamie Auvigne crossed the ball in to Ernesto Zapata, but his header when just wide.  The half ended with Milwaukee ahead 2 to 1.

Wave United wasted no time getting on the score sheet in the second half.  In the 47th minute, Marcelo Fontana's uncontested recovery of a rebound resulted in an easy goal against the flat-footed Calgary defenders.

Mustang Conrad Smith had the ball in some open space in the 58th minute, but his shot from the left wing hit the side netting.

Milwaukee tallied their fourth marker in the 60th minute when Todd Dusosky made a brilliant pass to Matt Schmidt, who had no trouble beating Pfannestiel.

Calgary put a second goal on the board in the 68th minute when captain Geert Brusselers spotted Mesut Mert, who received the pass behind the Wave United defenders.  He took full advantage and put the ball in the net.

In the final minutes, Calgary hit the crossbar twice.  Aaron Richer's shot hit the bar in the 73rd minute.  Nick Reyes was similarly unlucky two minutes later.  Brusselers had one last chance in the 84th minute, but Larkin made the save.  The game ended Milwaukee 4 Calgary 2.

Calgary ends the year with a 4-18-6 record.
