Team Calgary Match Reports by Jason Kmet
August 4, 2003 -- Vancouver Whitecaps 2 at Team Calgary 1
LATE GOALS PUT VANCOUVER OVER CALGARY
A pleasant holiday Monday afternoon at Foothills Park was spoiled for Calgary fans as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Team Calgary 2-1.
The locals had a good opportunity in the 11th minute, when Jordan Gillespie crossed the ball from the left. Mark Korthius was able to make contact, but his header went wide and high.
Calgary was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Nick Zuniga opened the scoring. He took a great free kick from about 23 yards out. Whitecaps keeper Mike Franks was frozen by the shot that ended up in the top left corner.
Team Calgary continued to put the pressure on Vancouver. In the 30th minute, Sean Fraser made a neat move that faked out the Vancouver defender. At that point he crossed the ball to Nicky Reyes at the top of the box, but the shot on goal was poor.
The Whitecaps had a chance in the 32nd minute when Zuniga gave the ball away to John Sulentic just right of the penalty area. Sulentic's shot was punched wide by Calgary keeper David Wiebenga.
In the 38th minute, Vancouver's Carlo Corazzin passed the ball in to Jason Jordan, who forced Wiebenga to make a quality stop. The bouncing rebound was also stopped before it crossed the line.
Vancouver nearly tied the game in the 55th minute when Jordan took a powerful rising shot from 20 yards in front of the goal. However, the ball hit the crossbar and landed underneath Wiebenga, who was on the grass after jumping for the shot.
The Whitecaps pressed further. In the 57th minute, Alfredo Valente crossed the ball to Corazzin, who headed it right at Wiebenga. Valente had a great chance in the 71st minute on a give-and-go play, but his shot went too high.
Valente crossed a ball in to substitute Niall Thompson in the 72nd minute, but Calgary defender Tommy Wheeldon Jr. headed it off the line.
Sean Fraser had Calgary's first scoring chance in some time when he received a good through ball towards the Vancouver goal. He was tackled inside the penalty area and did not get a decent shot away.
Vancouver tied the match in the 79th minute when Thompson passed to Jordan, who was alone in front of the net and put the header past Wiebenga.
Two minutes later the Whitecaps took the lead when Corazzin headed a Sulentic pass into the goal.
Calgary could not get any real offensive pressure in the dying minutes, so the score ended 2-1 in favor of Vancouver.

Orlin Chalmers and Matthew O'Connor have continued to ply their trade with Hamilton. Meanwhile, Sam Borgh cracked the roster of the Toronto Lynx.
