SOUNDERS DEFEAT CALGARY IN HOME FINALE

Calgary's entry in the A-League played its final home match this season on Thursday night.  It was a familiar script for Calgary's long-suffering fans.  The Calgary lads played well against the Seattle Sounders.  However, Seattle was able to convert one of their only chances of the match while Calgary could not do the same resulting in a 1-0 Seattle victory.

The game was played under rather unusual weather conditions.  Calgary has been experiencing abnormally warm weather, although the temperature dropped to a comfortable 25C by game time.  There was a noticeable amount of smoke in the air from forest fires to the southwest of the city.  Media reports warned for those with breathing problems to stay indoors.  Players were using inhalers on the bench before the match.  Despite the conditions, one of the biggest and loudest crowds of the season showed up at Foothills Park.

The first half had virtually no scoring opportunities and shots on goal.  No club had the advantage during the first 45 minutes.

The first shot on goal of the game occurred in the 49th minute by a Calgary player on Seattle keeper Preston Burpo.  Seattle's first chance was in the 57th minute when Kyle Smith headed the ball to Hercules Gomez in the box, but his shot went well over the bar.

The deadlock was broken in the 65th minute when Sounder Andrew Gregor bent a free kick past the Calgary wall and into the net from about 22 yards out.

The only good chance Calgary had to tie was in the 83rd minute when substitute Jamie Auvigne put a quality ball to Dwayne Gareau, who was all alone in front of the net.  However, he put his header over the bar.  The game ended 1-0.

GAME NOTES:

Calgary midfielder/forward Mark Korthius missed the game due to suspension...Jamie Glasnovic came on as a late sub for Calgary.  He has been a keeper for the team over the last two seasons, but with the arrival Eric Kenas he has sat on the bench as an outfield player.  He made his debut as forward in the last few minutes of the match...Calgary's home schedule is complete for the year.  The team travels for a two game road trip in Toronto and Montreal at the end of the month.  The match against the Toronto Lynx on August 29 will be shown on Fox Sports World...The future of the club is still in question.  Rumor has it that USL officials are coming to town this weekend to try to work out a deal for the club's sale.
