ALERT!

There is legislation in place here in Canada which came into effect December 2005 for "large" companies and December 2007 for "small" ( < $1M/annum in sales) companies, at any level, from manufacturing down to retail. Latest info linked here. This legislation is being interpreted by the CFIA (enforcers) and Health Canada (policy developers) to mean, essentially, that the words Carb, Low Carb, Net Carb, etc., can't be used on any product labels, the advertising for products, or even in a long-existing product name (!), etc., allegedly based on the idea that low carb is not proven as a nutritionally sound weight control method. Clearly, this is NOT based on any of the current research (see wilstar.net/lowcarb for a very informative collection of links and information related to carbohydrate metabolism, as well as my own LINKS page).

Meaning that those companies, large and small, who have already spent money developing products and product lines, spent money on labels and marketing, such as for CarboLite or Keto or Heinz 1-Carb, etc., either change all the labels (and the product names) -- very expensive! -- or don't bother either developing them IN Canada OR shipping them across the border. Bottom line? Canadians will have less choice -- again. We're going backwards.
