Theory Courses

Music theory is an integral part of music education. Understanding music notation is the foundation of playing an instrument with precision. Music theory not only complements and enhances practical studies, but also stimulates development and a greater understanding of music.

The following theory courses are offered at the Jean Lyons School of Music: Rudiments, Harmony, Keyboard Harmony, History, Counterpoint and Analysis.

Our courses are open to all students studying music and wanting to further their musical education.

Regular & Accelerated Courses (September - May)

During the school year, terms run from September - December and January - May to coincide with the RCM theory exams. Theory courses are offered through both classes and private lessons, and can be taken on a regular or accelerated basis:

  • Regular Courses - Classes and lessons are held once a week
  • Accelerated Courses - Classes and lessons are held twice a week

Rates are the same for both types (regular & accelerated) and the number of classes per term will be determined by the teacher.Tuition fees begin at $20.00 and up per class, and $25.00 and up per private lesson.
