2011 Outstanding Achievement Award
Posted: November 15, 2011

POLINA NOVOSELTSEVA, pupil of Mariana Medvedeva, was selected as this year’s winner of our School’s Outstanding Achievement Award. Polina has had a tremendous year in music. On the practical side, she received First Class Honours with Distinction on her RCM Grade 9 Piano Exam in August 2011 with 95%, for which achievement she was awarded the Dr. Thomas Ho Scholarship. On the theoretical side, Polina earned 93% in the History 1 Exam, which she also wrote in August. In May 2011, she received a First Class Honours mark of 81% in the Basic Harmony Exam. Polina participated in music festivals and received First Class Honours and either 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in all classes entered. She also performed in the Jean Lyons School of Music Grand Gala Concert at the Roy Barnett Recital Hall of the UBC School of Music on May 7, 2011.

2011 Student Feature Performances in the Greater Vancouver Area

MILTON LEUNG, pupil of Dina Corrado, and SEQUOIA SHERRIFF, pupil of Jean Brown, were both selected to perform in the Vancouver Music Festival Workshop Honour Concert at the Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church on March 12, 2011.

DANIEL HO, pupil of Angela Barbour, performed for the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society on February 16, 2011 as an ARCTA Award Winner. Daniel was the recipient of the Helen B. Patterson Scholarship (ARCT Level) for having received the Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada in the ARCT Examination in 2009. Daniel's program included Put On Your Running Shoes, a composition by Alexina Louie, former pupil of Jean Lyons.

FRASER JANG-MILLIGAN, pupil of Gaye Alcott, was chosen to perform for the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society at the Unitarian Church in April 2011. She was one of three outstanding young performers featured in this prestigious concert series.

2010 International North West Piano Ensemble Competition - Results

JOANNA CHU and CHRISTINE NGAI, ensemble pupils of Alan Crane, placed second in the International North West Piano Ensemble Competition Duo/Duet, Junior Division, held at Tom Lee on November 12, 2010. They competed against outstanding Duet performers from around the world.

Quatuor Piano & Lyons Quartètto Win Big in Germany Competition!

Congratulations!!! Our very own Quatuor Piano and Lyons Quartètto piano ensembles traveled to Marktoberdorf, Germany to compete in The 6th Annual International Piano Competition for 2 pianos, 6/8-hands, which was hosted by the Bavarian Music Academy from May 1st to May 3rd, 2008. Both groups finished first in their respective categories, earning monetary prizes and the opportunity to play at a prize-winner’s concert at Steingraeber Haus in Bayreuth, Germany. The six pianists who make up the two groups are all students of Jean Lyons School of Music. First united under the late Jean Lyons and currently coached by May Lim, these pianists have grown as musicians, learning about the dynamics of working as an ensemble.

CMC National Finals - Quebec City

Congratulations to Daniel Ho and Fraser Jang-Milligan (pupils of Angela Barbour) for making it to the National Finals of the 2008 Canadian Music Competition. The first two Provincial rounds were held in Vancouver earlier this month, and the National Finals will be held in Quebec city from June 23rd to July 6th, 2008. Both Daniel & Fraser will be representing BC in their respective age categories and we wish them the best of luck at the National Finals! Have a wonderful time in Quebec City!
