Maude Mary Holloway (Maude Clayton Palmer) married into a wealthy London
family. One of her four sons married a daughter of the 10th Marquess of
Queensbury (directly descended from Mary Tudor) and another married a
direct descendent of William the Conqueror, while a third son, Clayton played
County cricket for Middlesex before teaching at a private school. Two of
the sons reached the rank of Brigadier in the army. Her personal motto was 'Sto et Stabo' - Strong and Upright She wrote a number of children's books published by Wells, Gardner, Darton & Co. including Judith Carrington's Romance, Only Pretendin', Supposin', The Tale of Tommy Tinfoil, The Diary of Dapple Grey, I Wish, To Err Is Human and The Story of Angelina Wacks. As far as I know the books were also published in the United States and went into several reprints in this country, seemingly over a period of years up to the mid-1920s at least. She used at least two illustrators, Sybil Barham and Dorothy E Braham (note the very confusingly similar surnames) whose style was very similar and both also produced illustrations which were printed on early picture postcards. Sybil seemed to be the most popular judging by the number of different postcards published. from Peter Nelson, Durham, England. 28/03/2008 To see our Angelina Wacks Miniature book, use this link |
