Tipperary. Death certificate indicates that she arrived in NZ around 1905. Her daughter Bridie told me that her mother worked at the hotel of a Mrs. Gunn (daughter of Patrick's sister Johanna), and that either Mrs. Gunn or Patrick Gleeson paid for her to go back to Ireland before she got married. Patrick also paid for his sister (McCormick) to come out to New Zealand as they were evicted from their farm. His marriage and death certificates were obtained from information also in the family bible. Family tradition has it that he fell down the stairs in the Kaikoura Hotel, and died.
11-Mar-2001: Received an email from Maurice Cosgrave that provided the following information: "From personal recollections, although I was only 4 when James Alexander died, I still have vivid memories of him. He had a gold pocket watch which he used to dangle in front of me saying "This will be yours one day" He also had a marvellous gun, kepy in a wooden case. It was blued and chased in gold. Also there were racing colours, green and gold, vertical stripes, and of course the Family Bible which Margaret R-G has. He was a wonderful old man and used to tell me the most wonderful storie of "Billy the Spider"...He loved kids, and in actual fact died by falling down stairs at the Pier Hotel in Kaikoura whilst fooluing around with some children. The Publican at the time was my uncle Percy Cosgrave, a really lovable character, and an ex policeman." Also: "My sister Bernice, now dead, remembered Grandfather James Alexander well. He often stayed at our farm at Papakura, about 20 miles from Auckland. He used to get cheques from Ireland, fly into a rage and burn them in the old woodburning stove. Whatever it was that happened those many years ago in Ireland must have been pretty momentous"

RESEARCH: Daughter's birth certificate indicates that he was born abt. 1845 at Sydney, Australia.
Married in January 1866 at Panmure, Auckland, N.Z. Mother's name was Elizabeth..... living in Howick. Occupation was labourer.
Jul-1990: While in New Zealand visited Fr. Kevin O'Donoghue (His great grandson) who suggested that James may have been born in England but not registered. He was then registered in Australia at the same time as his sister Anne who was born at sea and registered in Australia when the ship docked there. He also indicated that James Brady's death notice was in the N.Z. Herald. He further indicated that there is no civil record of his marriage to Bridget Driscoll, however it is in the R.C. church records, which indicate that they were married in Saint Patrick's R.C. church in Panmure, Auckland, by Father Fynes. Witnesses were James Walsh and Mary Ann Murphy. Bridget signed with an X.
23-Jan-1992:Received a copy of his death certificate from RGO. It provided the following information - 30th of May 1922 at Howick, James Brady, a labourer. Male aged 77 years. Causes of death were (1) senile decay, (2) atheroma, (3) cardiac failure. He was last seen by JJY Babe on 15th April, 1922. His father was Peter Brady, a Hotel keeper. His mother was Margaret Brady, formerly Downey. He was buried 1st of June 1922 in Howick, by JJ Hackett, Roman Catholic. He was born at sea, and lived in NZ all his life. He was married at Panmure at age 21 to Bridget Driscoll, living and aged 77. He had 8 children still living. Males aged 55 and 47, and females aged 53, 51, 44, 40, 36, 31. The informant was Thomas McInnes, Undertaker, Howick. I also received a copy of his daughter's (Eva) birth certificate which indicated that he was born at sea.
10-Apr-1994, received a letter from Keith Sellar of Dunedin, New Zealand, which included Brady family group sheets. These provided the birth information of James Brady as being born at sea on 30 August, 1844, and details of his christening at St. Patrick's, Co. Cumberland, New South Wales, Australia. It also provided different information regarding Peter Brady, the father of James.
01-Aug-1994, My sister, Patricia, told me that James' father, Peter Brady, was a fencible soldier. James was born at sea enroute to New Zealand. Not long after they arrived in NZ, Peter was posted to New South Wales, hence the christening in Australia. The family was only in Australia for a short time before returning to NZ.
03-Jan-1995, received a letter from Keith Sellar of Dunedin, NZ which included a copy of the Christening certificate of James Brady in St. Patrick's parish, Co. Cumberland, NSW. His father is listed as Peter Brady and his mother as Margaret Downey. Their abode is given as 58th Regt. Parramatta. Keith's letter provided further details of the movement of the 58th Regt. from England to NSW in 1844, NSW to NZ in June 1845, NZ to NSW in December 1846, and NSW to NZ in mid 1847, making it very likely that James' father was in the 58th Regt. not a fencible settler, although there was a fencible, also born in Dublin, named Peter Brady. Also received a copy of his marriage certificate which indicated that he was married on January 20th 1866 at Panmure Catholic church to Bridget Driscoll, both were of full age, he was a labourer, a bachelor. The witnesses were James Walsh and Mary Anne Murphy.
