How Things Have Changed

Originally authored in the late 1990s

I have attended a few parties involving my old University associates and have been struck by the topics of conversation that now permeate the air (they sure have changed!). Since I was sober during both eras, I have a pretty good perspective. Here are a few comparisons (in the form of quotations from each era):

The Early 1980s
"Which is the better brand, Molson or Heineken?"
The Mid-1990s
"Which is the better brand, Playskool or Fisher-Price?"

The Early 1980s
"Excuse me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"
The Mid-1990s
"Excuse me, you have grey poop on your shoes. Check your baby's diaper."

The Early 1980s
"Is it better to drink milk after a hangover or some hair of the dog that bit you?"
The Mid-1990s
"What's the best way to get a fussy baby to go to sleep?" (This might also involve milk or alcohol.)

The Early 1980s
"I can identify my favourite brand of beer in a blind taste test."
The Mid-1990s
"I can identify my baby by smell when blindfolded."

The Early 1980s
Anthony is the quietest person at any party.
The Mid-1990s
Everyone (except children present) is as mellow as Anthony.

The Early 1980s
"Do I have enough money for beer this weekend?"
The Mid-1990s
"Do I have enough money for beer this weekend?"
