How Things Have Changed
Originally authored in the late 1990s
I have attended a few parties involving my old University
associates and have been struck by the topics of
conversation that now permeate the air (they sure have
changed!). Since I was sober during both eras, I have a
pretty good perspective. Here are a few comparisons (in the
form of quotations from each era):
- The Early 1980s
- "Which is the better brand, Molson or Heineken?"
- The Mid-1990s
- "Which is the better brand, Playskool or
Fisher-Price?"
- The Early 1980s
- "Excuse me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"
- The Mid-1990s
- "Excuse me, you have grey poop on your shoes. Check
your baby's diaper."
- The Early 1980s
- "Is it better to drink milk after a hangover or some
hair of the dog that bit you?"
- The Mid-1990s
- "What's the best way to get a fussy baby to go to
sleep?" (This might also involve milk or alcohol.)
- The Early 1980s
- "I can identify my favourite brand of beer in a blind
taste test."
- The Mid-1990s
- "I can identify my baby by smell when
blindfolded."
- The Early 1980s
- Anthony is the quietest person at any party.
- The Mid-1990s
- Everyone (except children present) is as mellow as
Anthony.
- The Early 1980s
- "Do I have enough money for beer this weekend?"
- The Mid-1990s
- "Do I have enough money for beer this weekend?"
