A detailed discussion of the theory of proton-precession magnetometers is given in a paper
I wrote several years ago. This paper describes, as well, some
considerations in the design of a magnetometer as a field instrument
which is suitable for prospecting or archaeological research.
In the above paper, I refer to two spreadsheets
which may be used to estimate the precession signal strength and
signal-to-noise ratio for various sensor configurations. These
are either a solenoidal or toroidal sensor or, alternatively, what I called a cylindro-toroidal configuration.
