Jerry gained experience playing the nightclub scene in Calgary, Alberta in the 1970's before moving to Los Angeles in 1977, where he played in a weekend band. David Foster, whom Jerry knew previously, helped him set up classes with some of his drumming heroes like session drummer Jim Keltner and L.A. Express drummer, John Guerin. In 1980 he moved to Vancouver and started to play in R and B clubs with Jim Byrnes, Doc Fingers and others. He returned to Calgary in 1982 and played with Gaye Delorme and a studio band at Thunder Road Studios called Prototype (single Video Kids).
