JD takes on the Western Canadian Karting Championship Rounds 1 & 2
May 20th.-22nd 2011

Only Three races into her senior karting career JD Saunders would take on some of North America’s top karters in the opening round of the Western Canadian Karting Championship held at GMR. With a spot on team Canada up for grabs everyone would be sure to bring their A game.

The weather could not have been better for Fridays official practice with the warmest day of the year so far. JD and her coach/ tuner Kevin Glover worked hard all day and made some changes for the last session to get within a few tenths of the leaders. This was a promising start to weekend with JD being one of the only drivers in the field not going out on a new set of tires in the last session of the day.

Saturday was cloudy and cool day. It wouldn’t be long before the rain set in just before the morning warm up. A theme that would last for the next twenty four hours. During qualifying JD struggled to find clear track in the rain and could only post the 31st fastest time. In  the pre final JD drove a smart races avoiding first corner mayhem to finish 16th. For the final Kevin decided to make some changes and they worked. Starting 16th JD managed to work her way up to 6th by the checkered flag. A fantastic result for her first ever national level kart race.

Sunday morning brought much of the same as Saturday. Cold and wet. After the morning warm up the rain had subsided and the track would begin to dry. Qualifying would be broken up into two groups. JD would be out in the first group on a damp track. The second group was much faster on a rapidly drying track. When all was said and done JD would set the 23rd quickest time. It was a mad dash to get to the grid on time to start the pre final after making the switch from wet to dry weather tires. JD would be involved in a turn one collision leaving her in 35th place. Putting in some of the fastest laps of the race JD managed to claw her way back up to 20th position. The bad luck would continue into the final with JD being the victim of another first corner incident. This time the kart would be too badly damaged to continue.

Sundays results were a little disappointing for JD. The speed was there but she didn’t have luck on her side. It was her first Westerns and it certainly wont be her last either! JD will be back in action in a few weeks time at GMR for rounds three and four of the West Coast Karting Championship.
