Thirteen community choirs from Nanaimo, Lantzville, Cedar, Yellow Point, Ladysmith and Gabriola Island have come together as partners to present a cultural experience that has never been offered before in this area. Nanaimo Sings! A Festival of Choral Music, which will take place on October 16, 17 and 18, 2008 will be an unforgettable celebration of the unique artistic strengths of the participating choirs.

 

On October 16 and 17, three Festival Concerts will be held each day at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. Andrew’s United Church. At each of these one-hour concerts, two or three of the participating choirs will be featured in 20-30 minute mini-concerts.

 

On October 18, a Gala Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at The Port Theatre at which all 13 choirs will perform both individually and en masse. The massed choir will perform a specially commissioned piece written and conducted by respected British Columbia composer, Larry Nickel. It promises to be a thrilling experience.

  • The Island Bel Canto Singers – Lionel Tanod, Director

  • Island Consort – Bruce Farquharson, Director

  • Malaspina Choir – Wade Noble, Director

  • Nanaimo Youth Choir – Marian Smith, Director

  • The Tidesmen Barbershop Chorus – Mike Gibbs, Director

  • VIVA – Laurie Munroe, Director

  • Yellow Point Singers – Doug Roszmann, Director

 Festival Passes and Gala Concert Tickets are available through The Port Theatre Box Office:  (250) 754-8550 or online at www.porttheatre.com. Festival Passes for $15 are valid for all six concerts on October 16 and 17; single-concert admission is $10 cash at the door. Seating is by general admission at all Festival Concerts. Gala Concert Tickets are $20 with reserved seating.
