University of Victoria Has wound up activity indefinitely UVic Caledonian Club SCD. Monday 7:30 - 9 p.m. Sept - April. No charge. Join or return anytime. A keen dancer from the last few years of SCD at UVic offers e-mail reminders of SCD events hosted by the local societies that students and others might be interested in. To be added to that list please write them via the webmaster. It is possible those reminders will also be posted to iDance, our e-mail listserver. If there is interest by students in creating the necessary club structure at UVic, or Camson College, please get in touch. I'm sure an interested teacher may be found

To avoid disappointment ALWAYS check for changes before heading out to any dance.

In poor weather don't assume a web site will be up to the minute, unless perhaps it displays a cancellation notice.

What kinds of Scottish Dance?

Most social Scottish dance on Vancouver Island takes the form of Scottish Country dance, SCD, or "country dance" to those involved. A few Scottish style ceilidhs may take place over the year.

These may be a classic ceilidh -- a fun evening of dance (social/participative & performance), music & perhaps song; the same with a bit of rowdiness (perhaps with a pint and "stovies" to hand, or lastly an evening of Scottish ceilidh dancing (or "reeling")

Most SCD groups operate from Sept to May or so, often offering weekly classes and some social dance evenings. The latter may either be included as part of a weekly program, if a larger group, and in any event for notable or special occasions. Check individual sites. Many offer Drop-in, student, half year, or term, and yearly rates. Larger clubs or groups tend to be affiliated with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, RSCDS

Some SCD groups will have a Burns Nicht ("Rabbie", or Robert, not Robbie, please). This is often near or on the 25th of January

Many offer an open-house event, often at no charge, in Sept and January to allow folks to try out SCD. Check with the groups or in the calendar of your local newspaper

Some clubs may have a group to demonstrate this social dance in a display or performance setting
