Victoria Contra Dance
series -- Two dance evenings per month
2nd Saturday
and Last Saturday of the month, Sept to June
Venues used:
St. Luke's Cedar Hill Anglican Church3821 Cedar Hill Cross Rd, Victoria, BC V8P 2M6 (at Cedar Hill Rd., NW corner), [mostly as an alternate location], and
St. Matthais Anglican Church hall, 600 Richmond Av. (at Richardson), Victoria, BC, V8S 3Y7

Dancer intro session 7:00 p.m., Dance 7:30 - 10 p.m.  E-mail notification list
See site calendar to confirm venue (St. Matthais as much as possible, St. Luke's as fill in)
Both are bus accessible via Vic Regional Transit/BC Transit

St. Luke's is on Route 24, which is pretty infrequent. Fortunately one run stops very near by, at the corner, at 6:47 p.m. Saturdays. Alternately one may arrive early using Route 25 (ask for Blekinsop & Cedar Hill Cross Rd ~6:18 p.m.) and walk east for about 12 minutes, or try for a 26 and walk south from west of University Heights shopping centre. To take the 27 or 28 means a slog up hill from Shelbourne. You have been warned

St. Matthais is on Route 7 with a stop @ Fairfield & Richmond, about two blocks south of the hall. Richmond is roughly between the two timing points (Fairfield at Moss & Foul Bay at Fort). The Douglas & View, eastbound ("UVic") departure at 1821, allows one to be at Richmond about 1835-40, at the hall before the workshop, with jacket off, shoes on. The westbound ("Downtown") departing UVic 1838 would have one there, hustling a bit, to be in time for the workshop

To avoid disappointment ALWAYS check for changes before heading out to any dance.
In poor weather don't assume a web site will be up to the minute, unless perhaps it already displays a cancellation notice

Contra Camps, Weekends

Vancouver Country Dance hosts the Chehalis Contra Dance Camp each September. This year it's 18-20 September 2015 - two bands, two callers, residential camp
In 2011 it returned to it's roots at Chehalis itself, in the Fraser Valley. This is a stunningly fun event, which fills rapidly (especially for women registering on their own). Get on their mailing list

Some video of two sessions of impromptu, midnight ECD, and some including what may be atypical Contra music! (from 2010). More images & videos

Raincoast Ruckus, Vancouver's in-town Contra dance weekend in mid-winter, is on sabbatical. Write to them if you're interested in helping it run

Dancing Fool
, annually in early February (5 - 7 February 2016), is the remaining Contra dance weekend event in Seattle. This is a serious-grin event, however it is also in the category of "Zesty Contra" so may not appeal to all, nor is it readily accessible to new dancers. Mailing list contact is recommended, this event fills rapidly. As of 2011 DF has added a Fall Fool in October (next FF is 28 - 30 Oct 2016, registration opening spring 2016)

"Folklife" - A number of local dancers head to the North West Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center on the American Memorial Day Weekend in May. Many bands & callers appear in rotation throughout the weekend in the Fisher Pavilion decked out with a dance floor (the Folk Floor). On the weekend it is re-named The Roadhouse, now memorialises our dear friend Warren Argo, as Warren's Roadhouse
