Icelandic Unitarian Congregations and Conferences
A Community of Congregations (PDF) - A short history of the Unitarian
denominational presence in Western Canada by Rev. Stefan M. Jonasson. Beginning
as the Western Icelandic Unitarian Free Church Association in 1901, the regional
Unitarian conference went through a variety of permutations - including the United
Conference of Icelandic Churches, Western Canada Unitarian Conference, and
Western District of the Canadian Unitarian Council - before becoming the Western
Canada District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. After 101 years of service,
delegates voted to disband the district when the Canadian Unitarian Council assumed
its responsibilities in 2002.

The Unitarian Church of Winnipeg, 1891-1966 (PDF) - The story of the Unitarian
Church of Winnipeg has been varied both as to background and early origin, beginning
with people of Icelandic descent and culminating in a single congregation, deriving
from at least three different streams of liberal religious thought and practice, which
have run together to carry on as one. This article by Rev. Philip M. Petursson first
appeared in
The Icelandic Canadian (Spring 1967).

First Federated Church of Winnipeg - The First 50 Years (PDF) - During the
Second World War, First Federated Church celebrated fifty years of liberal religious
thought amongst the Icelandic people of Winnipeg. From this modest church
emanated influences that extended to whatever section of the country people of
Icelandic origin settled and, beyond that, reached even to Iceland itself. This article
by Rev. Philip M. Petursson appeared in
The Canadian Unitarian (January 1944).

All Souls Unitarian Church of Winnipeg (PDF) - All Souls Church was organized in
1904 by Rev. H.F.M. Ross and Arthur Puttee, M.P. to "maintain regular services of
worship in this community and to upbuild in the hearts of the people the high ideals of
a rational religion in the love of God and the service of man." On the eve of its
fortieth anniversary, charter member Edgar J. Ransom reflected on its history. This
article appeared in
The Canadian Unitarian (December 1943).
