Communications Management

Planning and realizing a sound communications strategy requires business acumen, knowledge of political and social science, and, above all, an ethic of social responsibility.  The following quote from a classic public relations textbook captures my management philosophy:

"Humanization, suiting the message and the means of communication to the audience, speaking the receiver's language, timeliness, dramatization, two-way communication, reaching your own people first, facing the facts, performing a needed service, stressing positive benefits, repetition, overcoming refusal to pay attention, using leaders of opinion, preconditioning the audience, and keeping all communications in harmony."

Marston, John E. The Nature of Public Relations. New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co.

Website Management

Simplicity, conciseness, readability and an attractive visual design are the maxims of good website design.

Having your own website is the most economical means for getting information to your clients and potential clients. You must, however, make a commitment to keep the website up-to-date with new information. Once having designed your site, I can manage the site on a weekly or monthly basis or, i can also show you how to manage your own site as your organization grows and changes.

Examples of client websites:

Video, multimedia and other visual media

I have produced over fifty video programs for educational and broadcast television, government and non-government organizations. Telecast programs have appeared on regional and national networks.  I have also produced visual display material that has been used at trade shows such as Western Canadian Agribition, Western Canadian Farm Progress Show, provincial Teachers' Institutes, and regional exhibitions such as Buffalo Days and the Calgary Stampede.

Media production is a complex and potentially expensive process. Before embarking on a video, display or multimedia production, a client should fully understand the potentials and the limitations of these tools. Sometimes a communications objective can be met with something as simple as a poster, conference display or a short 35mm slide presentation. As an experienced communications generalist, I am able to determine an organization's needs, then produce a video or multimedia tool to suit any budget and timeline.

I was a founding director of the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association (SMPIA), and have served as the organization's president.

Research and evaluation

Research and evaluation are best managed by someone outside your organization. I have a background in social science methodology combined with extensive public relations experience. I can conduct an audit of your organizational communications program, and assess the effectiveness of publications and multi-media programs using focus testing and sample survey instruments. I have a Master's degree in communications (McGill University, 1982), with experience in textual analysis, focus group testing, and questionnaire design.
