Hudson's Bay Company Post - LaCloche, built in 1820.
The first buildings were at Flat Point on the north shore of
Whitefish Bay, but during the period 1831 to 1837 the post
operated at Sand Point on La Cloche Island opposite the
presúent Birch Island Indian Reserve. The remains of these
buildings have disappeared.
Most of the supplies traded for furs came from England by
way of Hudson's Bay, thence by the river routes to
Michipicoten on Lake Superior and on to Sault Ste. Marie,
finally reaching LaCloche by batteaux.
