Census Of The Village Of
Wikwomikong
December 20th 1869
Wikwomikong is the present village of Wikwemikong, which is a compound word derived from the words “Wekwe” a bay and “umik” a beaver, the meaning Beaver Bay. Wikwemikong was founded in 1828, by a number of Indians, Ottawa and others, whom Father Proulx, a secular priest, brought from Michigan. These Indians had already
accepted the Roman Catholic faith and had some training in tilling the soil and soon cleared a few acres of land, built a few log houses, erected a small saw mill and soon
had a thriving village situated at the foot of Smith’s Bay on the unceded portion of Manitoulin Island.
The December 20. 1869 census outlines, Wikwomikong had a population of 124 families, or 791 individuals who were represented by three chiefs.
