Notes for MARY BIRON:
Sault Star - 1910
Born In the Soo 84 Year Ago
Through the death of Mary Miron, the wife of the late Louis Miron, the last
family member of the original Biron family which settled in the Soo well niegh
a century ago, has passed away. Mrs. Miron after an illness extending over
several months passed peacefully away on Sunday night at the ripe old age of
84 years. She was born in the Soo when the population of the place numbered
less then fifty, and if the events which transpired during her long lifetime
could be recorded the story would make intensely interesting reading. The
deceased was sister of the late Joachim Biron who died seven or eight years
ago at the age of 82, and a sister of the late Mrs. Sayers, mother of Mrs.
Charles Pim, who passed away more recently. Mrs. Miron was also a sister of
the late Charles and Alexis Biron all prominent residents of the Soo half a
century ago. They were sons and daughters of the late Zavier Biron who came
here from St. Regis between ninety and one hundred years ago, and after
making a home for himself went to Rice Lake in the State of Wisconsin where
he married Miss Cadotte and brought her back to the Soo a bride. They both
lived to a ripe old age and were buried in the old cemetery on Queen Street
opposite the Sacred Heart church where their bodies have rested for many years
alongside those of the Boissineau's, the Lesages and the Grants. Of the last
named there were five or six brothers who lived at the Shingwauk and were the
sons of one of the early Hudson's Bay factors in this section of Canada. For
many years the old burying ground on Queen Street was the only cemetery west
of Garden river and contrary to popular belief this old cemetery is full of
bodies of those early residents of the Soo. And that it should be allowed to
remain in its present disgraceful condition is no credit to the city. With the
extremely interesting historical associations which surrounds this old field of
the Soo's early dead something ought to be done to shew a little respect to the
memory of the first settlers in this community. The funeral of the late Mrs.
Miron was held on Wednesday morning to the Sacred Heart Church where the Mass
was celebrated and interment was subsequently made in the Tarentorus Cemetery.
Notes for LEWIS MIRON:
When as a boy, he carried mail from Killarney Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie, a
distance of 200 miles, during the winter making the trip on snow shoes. At age
25 he served as a volunteer guardsman - later he accompanied surveying parties
and acted as a guide. In 1889 he became the Gargantua lighthouse keeper,
remaining there 24 years. Upon his retirement his son Charles Miron succeeded
him. A paralytic stroke deprived him of speech five years before his death. At
the time of his death, he was survived by a daughter Mrs. T. Roy and a younger
brother Raymond and nine grandchildren.
Child of MARY BIRON and LEWIS MIRON is:

MUCH SOO HISTORY LOST IN DEATH OF S. JOLLINEAU
Was Born And Lived In Soo Three Quarter Of A Century. Has Been True To The
Place And Himself
In the passing of Stephen Jollineau Monday the Sault lost one its oldest
residents and in with him goes the memory of many of the incidents in the early
history of the city, that might have been recorded, but now are beyond recall
for, Mrs. Jollineau though bright and active, still cannot now remember the
many stirring incidents in Mr. Jollineau's active and rather adventurous life.
He was born in the Sault 75 years ago and always remained true to the place of
his birth, always calling it home and always returning to it after his
wanderings as a guide to tourists and travellers and gold hunters, in the far,
far places of the north and far they were then.
Adventure came to him early for when he was a young man in his twentieth year
the Col. Wolseley expedition was on its way to Old Fort Garry to put down the
first Reil rebellion. That was quiet and exciting season for the little village
here, for the expedition had to pause here for a while and among those who were
stirred by the spirit of the time was Young Jollineau. He joined up nd went
through to the finish, doing his part in the heavy labour of making a way for
the expedition through the untracked wilderness from Port Arthur - then Prince
Arthur's Landing - through to Manitobia. Not much of a soldiers job, but they
all had to take thier part in it.
Waiting for him at home was Miss Adelaide Biron and when he returned they were
married and have had their home on what is now Bay Street, at the courner of
Jollineau Lane, all the years since. Mr. Jollineua owned then, quiet a strip
of land running from Queen Street down to the river, but not much of it remains
to the family. But the name remains to the lane running between the city
buildings and Columbia Hall.
With Captain Wilson on many of his trips into the North West Mr. Jollineau as
guide in charge and with many prominent tourists and engineers whose names are
now forgotten, save to some members of his family. He was through a number of
times to James Bay and once as far as Moose Factory. He was a member of Captain
Wilson's little band of volunteers here too, for five years. But perhaps his
heaviest service was given in carrying the mail from Little Rapids to the Sault
for 19 years by dog team. He was associated in much of his work and mail
carrying with the late joseph Boissineault of queen St. e. They were two of
the six men who carried the remains of Capt. Prince to its last resting place
on the Island now forming Bellevue Park.
Of late years Mr. Jollineau livied quietly at home, doing some work for those
who knew him well and who knew that his days work was a real day's work,
whether anyone saw him at work or not.
Every job with him was "something attempted, something done". He gave his best
to all he did and shall he not receive the commendation of "well done" will all
who have given faithful service.
