Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have a small transformer which I can use to attach the cable to the antenna. Should I use it?

A: No, don't use it. It will interfere with the matching of the antenna and cable. A key to this design is the fact that they are very well matched electrically.

Q: How does this antenna's performance compare to the four-bay antenna project I have seen elsewhere on the Internet?

A: I corresponded with someone who lives in a marginal reception area and who carefully built and set up both antennas. He said that the shoebox antenna produced a stronger signal.

Q: Should I make the antenna bigger than you say to get a better signal?

A: This antenna was designed with UHF channels in mind, and super-sizing it would be detrimental to these. But if you are in an area where the channels you want are on VHF frequencies, you may need a significantly wider dipole to receive them.

Q: How can I find out which channels are broadcasting in my area?

A: Have a look at www.tvfool.com. It has a great database with a brilliant visual interface. If you can't get a signal you think you ought to be receiving loud and clear, phone the TV station and ask to speak to their engineering department.
