Carol and I hike, climb, scramble, backpack, cycle, ski, snowshoe in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Our home city is Calgary, Alberta, Canada

What's new with Harvey in 2011?

What can I say? 2011 started out to be an adventure-filled, dream of going to Africa to climb Mount Kilmanjaro (5895m highest point in Africa) (Tanzania)  and Mount Kenya (Approx 5000m second highest point in Africa) (Kenya) and see a few animals on various safaris. I went with Carol, Isabelle, Urszula, Edna, Elizabeth, David T, and John R.  It was an introduction to the world of high altitude mountain climbing.  Carol did very well in Africa and on the mountain expeditions. I am very proud of her and there is no better person in the world who I love to travel with or go on these outdoor adventures. We have done quite a few adventures together and hope to do more with Carol. As soon as I came back I resumed my career and have been working again. I still have managed to get out to my beloved Rocky Mountains and complete some scrambles on my Kane list of to-dos.  I tackled most of the to-do mountains with Pat and Diane. Jill seemed to take to scrambling again and we completed a new summit from the new scrambles book by Andrew Nugara. I  also did my usual  xc-ski, downhill ski, snowshoe and hike.

Memorable moments 2011

Hiked Prairie Mountain repeated times to get the training effect before our adventure to Africa.

I lost my poles on Opal Ridge CORE scramble, 4 weeks later I went back with Carol and found them. This was after the bear ban in this area was lifted. Just before the bear ban, swear we could smell the bear in the area. Hunter told us some had shot a sheep and left it there and a mother grizzly was feeding on it.

Scrambles 2011: Mount Weed, Mount Indefatigable, Mount Burstall, Ha Ling Peak, Opal Ridge, Ptarmigan Peak, Copper Mountain, Sentry Moutain, Mount Tecumseh, Mount Whyte, Buchanan Peak, Hawkins Horseshoe, West Baldy Peak, The Wedge, South Tombstone, Rimwall Summit, Prairie Mountain, Mount Kent, Mt Baldy.

What's new with Harvey in 2010?

In 2010, I had another great and wonderful time in the outdoors with a few bumps along the way (there is a joke in there?) I did a lot of downhill and xc-skiing, hiking, cycling, snowshoeing and scrambling.  Carol, Edna, David, and myself went to Whistler to go downhill skiing in Dec. a couple of months before the Olympics. It was alot fun and we stayed at a really great condo in the village close to the ski hill (2 minute walk). Carol and myself went on a holiday to America in April, to visit Death Valley National Park, Red Rock Canyon (near Las Vegas),  Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs, Boulder City and the Hoover Dam were some the highlights of our trip. This trip did have the Wow factor and I really enjoyed it. Carol, Jeanette, Geoff and myself went to Jasper in March for the weekend. The drive to Jasper was scary and worse driving conditions, night driving, (winter storm),  I have ever experienced. The skiing conditions at Marmot Basin were great with all the new snow from the storm, we also did a snowshoe trip in the Tonquin Valley. I did one Bits ACC backcountry ski trip to Healy Pass.  Ended up going to Invermere with all the beautiful girls: Carol, Jill, Julia and Vicki.  We stayed at Vicki's lovely home and the supper she prepared for us was outstanding. Carol, Geoff, Jeanette and I had a fun rafting trip going the Bow River near Calgary.  Yana coordinated a CORE camping trip to Mount Kidd RV park, then the next day we hiked Mt Allen. Pat R. coordinated a CORE caving trip to Rats Nest Cave near Canmore - Grotto Mountain. Real caving is quite the adventure. I got to try one section which was a tight squeeze. While I am not claustrophobic, caving in small spaces is not for me. The theme for this season seemed to have been caves in the Rockies.  Other caves I visited:  Fall-out shelter cave near Heart Creek (hike), abandon mining cave near Protection Mountain (hike), caves on Pilot Mountain scramble, cave on Stanley Glacier hike, cave on the Batann hike on Grotto Mountain. Jill and Carol put on a CORE event called the Inner Child party. I still like the original title Candy Party but it turned out to be a great and wonderful time for all, me included. Julia coordinated a CORE return trip to Waterton for Canada Day.  The weather did not cooperate (rainy, wet and cold)  but I still managed to complete two scrambles. I got to climb outdoors a few times which I really enjoyed (Wasootch Slabs) . I climbed Grassi Lakes climbing area for the first time which was a hoot for me. Scrambling wise it was a season of change for me and some my scrambling buddies.  Some of them chose not to scramble with me for various reasons. The weather this summer was rainy, wet and cold. I managed to pick my days and get out to scramble. The fall turned out to be very nice and we were able to scramble right into November.  I did manage to find a new scrambling partner, Pat C, with whom I am totally compatible. Pat was motivated to get to the top (as I am too), never argued with me or gave me grief when we were off route and she did not mind meeting at 6:00 AM to go on a scramble.  Thanks to Pat b/c I did a lot of new summits this year which involved long days. I hope we can do some more next year.

Memorable moments 2010

Bike trips, Tour de Calgary (you can cycle the whole city on mostly bike paths), Lynn B CORE trips. Cycled the new bike path from Canmore to Banff

Bike and scramble - Mount Romulus, Tombstone South, Mount Aylmer

Scrambles- Tombstone South (disastrous trip, while I was driving home from this trip on Highway 40, I struck  a young grizzly bear who was running across highway. Lesson learned, it is not good to be driving at night. I also fell into the creek with my bike, to top it off I did not make it to the true summit).

Mount Bogart (nearly killed by lightning, hiking pole gave me a small electro shock when I put it in the air above my head, buzzing in my ears, hairs on my arms standing up straight, pelted by hail and horizontal rain). Good thing I had a helmet on.

The Tower (first time we retreated due to thunderstorm which turned out to be the smart move, second time success).

Pilot Mountain (enjoyed this difficult scramble, long day but some fun scrambling).

Mount Smuts (one of the best difficult scrambles I have done - Willis and Enrique).

Mount Sarrail (first time we took the wrong trail and ended  up at Three-Isle Lake campground; second time no summit due to too much snow at the crux, but it has some of the best views all around for a mountain).

Observation Peak, Little Hector and Mount Andromache were very nice trips with great views.

Reunited with Marta to help her and myself finish Mount Bell. Marta has done all the Kane scrambles and had a fun dress-up party, after she completed all the scrambles.

Did some scrambles and hikes with Kris Thorsteinsson: the guy is a legend and has some great stories about the history of scrambling  and the people: e.g., Alan Kane.

Summited some unfinished peaks: Mount Crandell, Mount Bogart, Mount Nestor, Turtle Mountain, Mount Bell.

CORE had a Branko Peterman celebration party.  He passed away last year. I will miss him.

I got to be a movie star, let's see if I make it into Mitch's Documentary.

I did a CORE presentation of the scrambles I have done over the last 10 years for the Oct. CORE meeting.

I have hiked up and down every type of terrible, horrible, ankle busting scree in the Rockies this year. My friend Willis is correct - there should a grading scale for scree on a trip - friendly to down right nasty?

I lost two pairs of scrambling gloves, one on Mt Glasgow and one on Mt Bogart. Yes Jill, I did not go back and try to find them.Helped build an igloo on Prairie Mountain (Steve).

Hardest Scramble I did was Mt Smuts.

Scrambles 2010: Mount Crandell, Buchanan Peak, Turtle Mountain, Mount Ward, Heart Mountain(2), Mount Yamnuska(2), East End of Rundle, Grotto Mountain(2), Mount Lady Macdonald, Ha Ling Peak, Rimwall, Mount Baldy(2), Mount Nestor, The Tower(2), Mount Galatea, Mount Smuts, Mount Romulus, Mount Glasgow, Mount Bogart, Tombstone South, Mount Sarrail, Mount Tyrwhitt, Mount Pocaterra, Mount Aylmer, Pilot Mountain, Stuart Knob, Helena Ridge, Television Peak, Storm Mountain, Mount Bell, Fossil Mountain, Mount Redoubt, Little Hector, Mount Andromache, Observation Peak, Mount Byrant, Mount Allan, Mount Ware, Windtower, Midnight Peak, Wasootch Peak, East Peak of Mt. Wendell, Loder Peak, Shunga-la-she, Prairie Mountain(lots).

What's new with Harvey in 2009?

Recall my 2009 season.  Num-Ti-Jah Lodge New Year's with CORE. It turned out to be a very good scrambling summer for me and a season of change (personal stuff). I completed everything I set out to do scrambling-wise, completed some unfinished peaks in 2009.   Carol and myself (Geoff joined us later), we went to Black Hills and camped and visited Mount Rushmore, Badlands US, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Devils Tower,  Little Bighorn Battlefield (Custers Last Stand). Carol and I went to Phoenix with Edna and David T. It was a great time, warm weather, swimming pool, hiked South Mountain, then Carol and myself went to Grand Canyon and Sedona.  Backpacked to Little Yoho Campground with the back-pack buddies Olan, Craig and Martin (near Stanley Mitchell Hut), drank to forget, beer goes down well after soaking the bottle in a glacier river. Later I did a Stanley Mitchell Hut backpack with CORE.  Glacier Park - Rogers Pass - Canada with Carol, Jeanette, Isabelle, Urszula, Edna, David T and Grant. Red Deer cycle trip, Elbow cycle trip, Sheep River cycle trip, Calgary city bike paths, Chestermere cycle and Highwood cycle. Backcountry trip: x-c skied to Elizabeth Parker Hut (Lake O'Hara), Carol, Isabelle, Diane, Edna, David T and Geoff, lots of fun, we laughed a lot. Cavalcade Group Camp - CORE.   Carol and myself went to Whitehorse to visit Mitch, Angela, Tomio and Sam in September, had a lot fun playing with the kids and exploring. We hiked Grey Mountain, cranberry picking, hot springs, Crag Lake cabin near Carcross. Thanks to Tim and Joanne I have done outdoor climbing at Wasootch Slabs - outdoor sport climbing (top and lead climbing). I have done lots of indoor climbing e.g. Stronghold, Mount Royal wall, U of C wall, Calgary Climbing Center, Crux mostly with Bob S.

Memorable moments 2009: I did a number of bike and scramble trips (Outlaw Peak, Mount Fox and Mount Shark).  Scrambled Isolated Peak when we got to the SMH hut with Geoff (got back to hut to eat the leftovers and just before it got too dark out) and scrambled Mount Kerr the next day, true summit is at the big cairn (Kane's description is not correct.) I scrambled Sunwapta Peak solo; big mountain elevation-wise and lots of elevation gain but it is a very easy scramble. I had to do Mt Shark twice to finish it off (solo trip the second time).  I seemed to do a few snow scrambles: Nigel Peak, Isolated Peak, Mount Kerr and Mount Field. Special thanks to my friend Jill, she did very well under some difficult scrambling situations, i.e. Mount Lawson (worse scramble I have done), Nigel  Peak, more of a mountaineering trip, lots of snow (ice axes needed), Mount Warspite (one loose, scree-filled, mountain). She never complains when things get tough e.g. Mount Shark scramble #1.  Did a couple of scrambles  with Vern Dewit from RMB Forum (Mount Fox - I liked it Vern - and Mount Inglismaldie).  He is a very fast scrambler.  Scrambled again with Dave Mulligan from the Ramblers. I wanted to scramble Mt Smuts but snow made us change the objective to Mount Murray. (Dave had lead a newbie CORE scramble group up Mount Temple in 2001). Lost my camera on Junction Hill hike, hiked back up the hill and found my camera. CORE had their 10th Anniversary meeting (party). I MCd the meeting and put on a slideshow of 10 years of events. Our family grew: three new babies but we lost my brother George who passed away.  Hardest scramble I did for 2009 was West Baldy Peak.

Scrambles 2009: Sunwapata Peak, Tangle Ridge, Mount Burgess, Mount Hood, Grizzly Peak, Opal Ridge, Compression Ridge, Mount Buller, Wind Ridge, Mount Lorette, Outlaw Peak, Gusty Peak, Mount Lorette, Mary Barclay's Mountain, Snow Peak, Pocaterra Ridge, Mount Abbott, Grey Mountain, Exshaw Ridge, Mount Fox, Mount Inglismaldie, Mount Murray, Isolated Peak, Mount Kerr, Nigel Peak, Mount Warspite, Mount Lawson, Mount Field.

What's new with Harvey in 2008?

Recant some of the wonderful trips for 2008. New Years with Carol, Edna, David T. and Joseph in Golden. Cycled Highwood Pass CORE trip. We tried river canoeing for the first time, we paddled down the Milk River - CORE Trip by camping out at Writing on Stone Provincial Park. Glacier Park - Montana USA - CORE Trip - Canada weekend. Diane and myself lead a big group to Mt Assiniboine - CORE trip - weekend trip, we helicopter in and hiked out ( I have now hike the trail going from Sunshine Ski hill to Mount Shark parking lot), we had great weather for two days and tried to scramble Wonder Peak (built a cool snowwoman). Backcountry ski up the road to old Fortress Ski area with Carol, Edna and David T. I lead a trip: Bow Hut CORE trip backcountry skiing with Carol, Isabell, Edna, David T., Geoff one of the best backcountry huts you can go to. Mount Remus bike and scramble with Diane. Finish-off the Rockwall trail with back-pack buddies (Olan, Craig and Martin). I helped Jill with the CORE scramble THE FIST (took a real cool picture of the group (Fist of Furry) in front of The Fist). I went to Hawahi with some work buddies- Maui hiking, volcano Haleakala, snorkeling, Hana, hiked inland and ocean lava hike. Carol and myself went to Yosemite National Park in USA. Wilderness first aid course with David Watt - CORE

Memorable moments 2008  Had a number of incomplete summits (failures!) due to various reason Mount Bell, Mount Buller, Mount Sparrowhawk, Kananaskis Peak, Mount Burgess. Tried to scramble Mount Bell with Diane turned out to be epic trip, snow squalls can produce lightning conditions, so close yet so far from the summit.  Mary Barclay's Mt had to try two times, got it right on the second try. Mt Remus you can get to the top by perseverance, Diane showed that to me on this scramble, Diane lost her bolt for quick release wheel (I have a extra one at my place, we drove back to my place), I cycled back to vehicle to get my bike-lock (kind of a waste of time), we waited for thunderstorm to pass by, we were below the summit block of Mount Remus, we scrambled back to the top to find the easy way down, which we did. Isabelle and myself tried to scramble Mt Warspite but rain change our plans so we scrambled Commonwealth Peak in the rain, Burstall Lakes area was like a flood plain (wet feet). Third time I have scrambled Mount Temple, really like scrambling with snow and ice axes. Hardest scramble of 2008 was Mount Wapta, there is near vertical wall (summit block) you have to scramble to get to the top much like Mt Stephen.

Scrambles 2008: Belmore Brown (Tiara Peak), Bow Peak, Mount Baldy, Wonder Peak, Mount Bourgeau, Mount Sheol, Nihahi Ridge,  Wasootch Peak, Baldy Pass (GR380492),  Holly Cross Mountain, Read's Tower, Vermillion Peak, Wind Ridge, Mount Bell, Mount Sparrowhawk, Kananaskis Peak, Mount Burgess, Mary Baraclay's Mountain, Mount Remus, Mount Wapta, Commonwealth Peak, Mount Buller, Mary Barclay's Mountain, Mount Temple, Limestone Moutain.

What's new with Harvey in 2007?

I'd like to recap some of the great trips I did in 2007: Backcounty skiing with Jimmy to tried to get to Citadel Pass, X-C Ski into Bryant Creek Hut with Carol, Edna, Dave and Jeanette, Jasper Weekend with Carol, David and Edna; Waterton Canada Day weekend - CORE Gang; and the Waterton New Year's weekend with Carol, David, Geoff, Edna, and Jeanette. Carol, Jeanette and myself went to Peru and hiked the Machu Picchu Trail in September; a trip to Whitehorse with Carol to visit Mitch, Angela, Sam and Tomio where I helped with a house reno; a downhill ski trip with Olan to Big White and Silver Star - telemark skiing. Failed attempt at paragliding. I also joined the Alpine club and went to the ACC Mountain Camp with Willis. I learned that scrambling is quite different from real mountain climbing. My scrambling partners were quite different this year. I managed to get out with many different people this summer. I met a few new people. Mt Kidd scramble turned out to one of the hottest days in the summer. The one ACC trip I did with Kris Thorsteinsson (he made many ascents with Alan Kane)  and Willis to Mt Lougheed (moderate scramble) was a great trip. I did a number of wonderful scrambles with Joanne. We met a grizzly bear (too up close and personal for my liking) on the way up to Storelk scramble. I finished all the Kane scrambles in the Highwood area. The last one was Mt Rae, thanks to Grant and Diane.

Memorable moments 2007 Made a wrong turn  trying to scramble Holy Cross Mtn ended up on new mtn Willis coined Colonel Belcher. Joanne and myself tried to scramble Mt Wapta but it was raining when we got to the trailhead, so we drove back to K-country to scramble Mt Kidd South Peak that is long day and dedication to want to scramble. Snowshoe up to Old Goat Glaicer with CORE.  Short-rope Carol on the scramble Indian Ridge in Jasper. Hardest scramble this summer  was Mt Engadine.

Scrambles 2007: Yamnasku, Mount Rae, Mount Bell, Mount Kidd, Ha Ling Peak, Indian Ridge, Mount Wilcox, Mount Galwey, Mount Alderson,  Mount Baldy, Mount Storelk, Mount Bosworth, Belmore Brown, Exshaw Mountain?, Mount Charles Stewart, Mount Lougheed, Rose Petal, Fool's Gold,  Coral Mountain , Osprey,  Storelk, Mount Kidd South, Mount Engadine, Belmore Brown.

What's new with Harvey in 2006?

I  had a busy and adventurous 2006; snowshoeing, skiing,  hiking and scrambling. For holidays -  Carol and myself went to Utah to see and hike in  the national parks - Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches. We also went to New York, NY and Washington DC. to see the sites. Carol broke her ankle -- and ruined her hiking this summer. Willis broke his foot -- and ruined his scrambling this summer. I did mostly scrambles, completing some failed previous climbs. Thanks to all the scrambling buddies like Malgosia, Willis, Geoff, Edna and Dave. Special thanks to the most super-duper scrambling friends, Jill and Isabelle.

Memorable moments 2006 - Rescuing my gloves, then being chewed out for rescuing them by three angry women (Jill, Isabelle, Malgosia) ; watergun fights (shooting rather than being shot at); nearly being hit by lightning; climbing over 30000 m elevation gain (vertical)  this summer; 25 summits; telemark skiing powder at Sunshine; telemark skiing on the Wapta Glacier; snowshoeing Crystal Ridge; Christmas and New Year's Eve in Canmore; Ribbon Creek CORE Pinic hike; rescuing Carol from Three-Sisters Pass after she broke her ankle; My mountain bike falling off Olan's vehicle on to Hwy 1 (luckily it did not get run over by any vehicles); Cycling to the trailhead of Banded Peak; Waterton weekend - three scrambles in three days (Bertha Peak, Turtle Mountain, Mount Carthew); scrambling Mount Edith - three summits in one day, scrambling Niblock and Whyte two summits  in one day. Hardest scramble I did this summer was Mount Arethusa, did it twice to get it done.

Going's on for this year. Waterton weekend with CORE-Canada Day. The famous Mount Crandell scramble. Going up Tick Ridge, group dynamics stuff, giving up getting to the summit, bad bushwacking, and getting hit by a rock. We also scrambled Mount Lineham and Akamina Ridge in Waterton. Terry coordinated a campout in the Highwood area. We hiked Pasque Mtn and then scrambled Mist Mountain the next day. The Branko incident on Mist Mountain would be my worse accident. We would be persistent (Thanks Willis) to scramble  Wasootch Peak. It took us three times to get it right.

The special event of the summer 2005 was the Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition, which we participated in by scrambling up Castle Mountain and Mount Fable. Thanks to all of the CORE buddies who helped me put new log books and canisters on those mountains.
