Why do we give our music away for free?
A word from Happy Puppy Records Prez Lee Rosevere: We believe that the power of promotion, in all its forms, is the best way for people to hear your music. Indie artists have a hard time getting heard, especially today. The way to get heard is to give something away for free. You can choose how much to give away, but at Happy Puppy, we believe in giving as much as possible. We believe in karma; the more you give, the more you receive. It might not happen right away, and you better not expect it. It might not happen at all. However, that's the chance you take. Happy Puppy Records is mostly a hobby for me and I run it in my spare time. I know I will never make a living off my recording career, but that doesn't stop me for making music because I love doing it. And I could keep that music on my shelf, not let anyone hear it unless they pay me first. And you can guess how many people will pay for something they'd never heard by someone they don't know. You got it. Zero. Or I could put my music on the internet for free, let people hear it, they become interested, I get more exposure, and who knows what it could possibly lead to. But I would never know if I didn't take the chance. I don't see any money for it, but that's ok...I wasn't trying to make money in the first place, so I haven't lost anything. What I do see for it is exposure, an audience, and opportunities. Now, if you recognize or agree with this belief, then you are the kind of musician I'd like to talk to and hear your music. If I like what I hear, you're in. And hopefully it will open new doors for you, new opportunities, create a fan base (however small - all fans are equally important!)...who knows. But you won't know, unless you try. If you think I'm nuts and wouldn't even DREAM of giving your precious music away for free, then I wish you the best of luck.
