Sonic Lab @ Phillip T. Young Recital Hall -- Nov 3, 2006
Crazy music for crazy people.

The night started off with Stephen Lochbaum and Alexander Dunn playing a piece called "Nagoya Guitars" by Steve Reich. It was rad. This is my second time hearing the piece. I think it has something to do with one of the guitars slowly going out of phase.... |

Second piece was called "Critical Band" by James Tenney. It was a messed up piece. Christopher Butterfield conducted this piece. It was pretty much musicians all over the recital hall, and at first they play all in tune. After a while, they'll start detuning a certain amount of cents. Sooner or later, the whole hall is filled with beats. It was pretty sweet. |

Third piece - "Moonrise with Memories" by Frederic Rzewski. Christopher Butterfield conducted this one as well. I think this is just a weird combination of instruments - bass trombone, flute, clarinet, harpsichord, accordion, guitar, and marimba... What the crap? |

Fourth piece - "The Sweet Queen" by Rudolf Komorous. There was actually a bass harmonica! But not enough of it which was too bad.. That thing was a beast. Interesting piece I think. |

Next piece - "Phrygian Gates" by John Adams. This was played by Jessica Deltcher. Just played in the phrygian mode. Beautiful, beautiful piece. Definitely takes a lot of skill to play it. |

Last piece - "Lux Aeterna" by Gyorgy Ligeti. Unaccompanied voices singing dissonance and a wide range. Sounds like a hard piece to get down... It was interesting.. Overall, yet another good and interesting concert. |
