Do NOT your vehicle's engine for more than 10 to 15 seconds.

Idling a vehicle for more than 15 seconds is one of the most common financial and environmental infractions committed on a daily basis by Canadians.  In addition to getting zero kilometers per liter while idling, the losses are further compounded by the added wear on the engine and emissions control systems as well as un-necessary pollution.

Here are some basic statistics on Engine Idling:

  • Average passenger cars burn about 2 liters of gas per hour when idling.

  • Every liter of fuel produces 2.4kg of CO2, the main greenhouse gas.

  • Each hour of idling is equivalent 50km of engine wear.

  • Idling engines are inefficient due to low combustion temperatures.

  • Extended idling causes fouled spark plugs and other ignition problems.

  • It is less expensive to shut down and restart than to idle for 10 seconds... even when taking the "starter wear" into account !!!
