Why is idling your vehicle's engine for more than 10 to 15 seconds,  BAD?

Here are some basic statistics on Engine Idling:

  • Average passenger cars burn about 2 litres of gas per hour when idling.

  • Every litre of fuel produces 2.4kg of CO2, the main greenhouse gas.

  • Each hour of idling is equivalent 50km of engine wear.

  • Idling engines are inefficient due to low combustion temperatures.

  • Extended idling causes fouled spark plugs and other ignition problems.

  • It is less expensive to shut down and restart than to idle for 10 seconds... even when taking the "starter wear" into account !!!
