Note that these pages were written some time ago, and the phenomenon known as "web rot" has taken its toll in the interim, so not all external links still work. I do not have the time to keep checking all the links to see if any have broken, so only those that I notice and find time to fix will be remedied.

This set of pages attempts to summarize what is known about my forebears. Much of this is the result of my father's work over the past few decades, to which I have recently started adding. The majority of the people listed are on my father's side of the family (GRAY), with most events taking place in Australia, and just a generation or two going back to various countries of origin. There is very little information going back further than 1800 or so, and things are much sketchier still on my mother's side (SPENCER), but that all just gives me something to do!

The story so far: the first of my ancestors arrived in Australia in 1792, shortly after the start of western colonization (which was 1788, for those who came in late). All of my paternal ancestors had arrived by 1844 from Scotland, England, and Ireland. In particular, the GRAYs arrived from Morayshire, Scotland, in 1839. On my mother's side, it took until 1959 to branch out to Australia, when she herself arrived from Surrey, England. She is primarily of English extraction, with a Scotsman and a stray Austrian somewhere in the mix.

As for me, I am working on spreading the GRAY genes around the planet: in 1993 I moved to Canada, and in 1999 married a Nova Scotian lass. Her father is of English descent, and her mother's ancestors were Scottish.

I do not vouch for the accuracy or completeness of the information in these pages. Note, especially, that events prior to about 1800 tend to be speculative, some more than others.
