PLEASE
NOTE:
Where we have
not yet found Parish Registers to prove these descendants, particularly in the
period prior to 1750, we have relied upon the PRESTON GUILD MERCHANT ROLLS for
each Guild which has been held every twenty years since 1642. In Each Guild
every existing Burgess is entitled to register his sons at the next Guild
after their birth. The sons in turn register their sons, and so on.
Nephews, grandsons and brothers could also be registered by a male family member
who was a Burgess in the Guild if a father was not able to do it.
A Burgess did
not have to live or work in Preston to remain a member of the Guild. However he
had to appear every twenty years at the Guild, or send a proxy registration with
another family member in order to remain a Burgess with all the rights,
privileges and tradition to which he was entitled.
In our
GORNALL FAMILY, there were members registered in PRESTON GUILDS held in the
following years:
1642,1662,
1682, 1702, 1722,1742,1762,1782,1802,18022,1842,1862,1882,1902,1922,1952 (WWII
prevented the Guild being held in 1942, and so it was held in 1952 instead). The
next Guild after that was 1972 and 1992. Next PRESTON GUILD is in 2012.
In all of the
above Guilds GORNALLS confirmed their own registration and proclaimed their sons
as Burgesses as was their right. The Guild Rolls indicate the relationship
between fathers and sons which is excellent genealogical proof for the
relationships in family trees. In reviewing the Guild Rolls now, it is evident
that in some cases, but not all, the Registrar of the Guild Roll sometimes
took the time to indicate the occupation and residence of the Burgess.
Sometimes he did not not. Also sometimes the Registrar indicated that the
Burgess is deceased at the time of the Guild as an explanation as to why that
individual was not registered.
Hugh Gornall
who became the first one of that name to become a Burgess in the PRESTON GUILD
MERCHANT in 1642, had two sponsors to enable him to become a Burgess. From there
on all his descendants were registered by their parents or a male family member down to the still living
family members who were last registered in 1992.
