EMIL VAN HORN

A dapper, diminutive fellow with an Errol Flynn-like moustache, Emil Van Horn is a mystery compared to his contemporary gorilla men Ray Corrigan and Charles Gemora. Despite his involvement in a number of popular productions throughout the 1940's, Emil's career in Hollywood was limited to his gorilla suit work (with a couple of exceptions). Nothing has come to light about his origins, though it is documented that in addition to his work in films like THE APE MAN and NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK (W.C. Fields), Emil was a very active feature on the burlesque circuit appearing with scantily clad ladies in Beauty and the Beast acts. Once cinema work dried up, Van Horn continued to work the clubs in his decaying suit until it was stolen. Drifting from Florida to New Orleans, Emil briefly returned to the silver screen as an extra in local productions. The man who played the menacing beast Satan in the immensely popular serial NYOKA, died New Years Day 1967, alone and penniless.
