Once a car guy, always a car guy. That’s how we would describe
Gord Forman. A well known Winnipeg Manitoba figure around cars since the 70’s
when he owned a
speed shop. Gord set cars aside for over a decade and went windsurfing with his
son. Then, after the kids left home Gord again turned his attention to his 1937 Pontiac
4-door Touring Sedan he had harboured for nearly 25 years.
Bought off cousin Barry's Ford dealership used car lot back in the mid 70’s, the old Pontiac was a runner. However, for a guy that owned a speed shop and drove a C/Altered Model A and a BB/FC the change in power train took place very quickly. A ‘prepped’ 350/350 combo from the speed shop propelled the old Pontiac through it’s original 4.33 rear end quite nicely. Power steering through a Cad’ tilt/telescopic and power boosted brakes added to the comfort and safety. The car stayed just a fast old car for the next 20 years.
In 2002 Gord’s daughter Niki announced her wedding plans that included the old Pontiac. It was just the excuse Gord needed to complete the car.
Suspension got updated by replacing the stock front springs with Easy Street Big Bore air bags with the controls hidden in the glove box. Fatman dropped spindles got it down. 17 x 7 Torque Thrusts all round with Avon Racing ZZ1 P205/45/R17 tires are driven by a GM 10 bolt with 4.10 gears.
Another car guy coming out of a 25 year hiatus, John Scheels demonstrated he hadn’t forgotten a thing replacing the stock upholstery with some quality threads in velour and naugahyde
Then, a longtime friend Lester Krahn got to let his creative juices flow on the body work and paint. Making the most of the budget, Lester made the bumpers, door handles, trunk hinges and trunk handle disappear and made new running boards, replaced the centre hood chrome trim with a formed panel and took the headlights off their fender mounts and recessed them into the fenders. Gord asked for Lester’s rendition of a Thom Taylor drawing and got it in ’01 Mercedes amethyst and silver. Custom flames and an airbrushed Pontiac emblem just hinted at Lester’s true talents.
Since the wedding, Gord enjoys putting on at least 1,000 kms a month cruising around town showing his fellow Manitoba Street Rod Association members that he’s still a car guy.
