Palms, Pines and Pools

In February of 2003, we took a 3 week motor trip from our home in Abbotsford, BC to Palm Springs, CA, and this is an illustrated story of some of the things we saw and did along the way.

We drove the Interstate (I5) down to Sacramento, CA mostly in the rain. Our first photo opportunity came when Mount Shasta appeared through the morning mist.

One week was spent in a time-share resort at Genoa, NV. Genoa's claim to fame seemed to be that it was the first incorporated settlement in Nevada having received its charter in 1851. Among the few businesses still in operation was "Nevada's Oldest Saloon". The town started life as a staging point for Mormon settlers as they made preparations to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The resort's( Walley's Hot Springs & Resort) main feature was a series of 7 hot pools , each at a different temperature. It was located in the Carson River Valley just east over the mountain from Lake Tahoe and close to a number of ski resorts and about 40 miles south of the Reno casinos.

`

Each day, we explored a different part of the area visiting Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood Ski Resort, a number of old mining towns and even the odd casino (Playing the nickel slots only) before returning home for a restorative soak.
