Thank you to Edie, an ex-student of mine, for doing some research into Paul Gilroy. She found a number of census records which she forwarded to us and also found the information below.
Paul Augustus Gilroy reportedly emigrated (or at least crossed the border) from Canada to the U.S. in 1865-1870 (1865 was listed in one census, 1870 in the next). His father was Edward Gilroy (51, farmer born in Nova Scotia), and at the time of the 1880 census the family was living in Grand Traverse, Michigan. His wife Sarah, Paul's mother, was born in England. Children of Edward included James (22, farmer), Mary (21, school teacher), Paul (19, farm labourer), Anna (15, at home keeping house), Isabella (11, at school), and Millee (6, at school). In an 1870 census the wife of Edward is still living, and her name is Sarah (age 34, born in England). An interesting thing is that all the children are listed in 1870 as born in Canada West, and Edward is listed as born in New York. But this unfortunately is a common error in census information - even when it's clearly the same family, birth years and places seem to change depending on the decade the information is transcribed! In an 1880 census they are all listed as living in Traverse City, Michigan. Sarah must have died between censuses as she is not listed. In 1910, the census lists Leo and Paul living together alone.
