When scanning family photographs, look for more than the family members in the photograph.  I have scanned photographs at 300dpi (dots per inch) and then zoomed in to 1200dpi to get a closeup of military medals, pendants or pocket watches.  I've also zoomed in on background photographs on mantles or hanging on the wall.  Doing this has usually turned up more questions than answers, but has also enlightened me as to certain social practices of the time.  There were many social clubs and organizations during the turn of the last century.  It is interesting to see a pendant being worn by great uncle so-n-so that connects him to a specific social group. The photo below is a closeup of the photo on the left.  Note the tie pins as well as the military medal.
