About Gwen Molnar

Poet, painter and writer of children's fiction, Edmonton born Gwen Molnar has been painting for decades and writing for children for twenty years. She served in the Canadian Navy (WRCNS), graduated from the University of Alberta, (B.Ed., '49, B.A. (Art) '79) was Film Librarian for the National Film Board's Alberta office then lived for 23 years in Rochester, Minnesota where her husband, George, was a Mayo Clinic consultant. Gwen worked as a medical proof-reader at Mayo before their children Jane and Charles were born, and later did substitute teaching.

Painting-related Information

Her paintings were included in many juried shows in southern Minnesota and in a state-wide show in '74. In '83 she attended the Emma Lake Workshop and that year had a one-man show at Edmonton's Graphica Gallery. Later, Gwen's paintings were shown at the Vik Gallery and Kathleen Laverty Gallery in Edmonton and the Cambrian Rose gallery in Ottawa. Since '85 her work has been available at the Sales and Rental Gallery of the Edmonton Art Gallery. Except for a large series of almost abstract landscapes - both small and large, Gwen's work has been nonrepresentational.

Writing-related Information

Gwen is the author of two poetry collections for children, I Said to Sam, and Animal Rap and Far Out Fables, three Sebastian first chapter books and an early chapter book, No Presents Please and has been published in several children's magazines and in six anthologies. Her work has been read on the CBC, animated on Fred Penner's Place, and read on Sherri Lewis' Lamb Chops Show.
