PRINCESS ADELAIDE.

These
two ships were designed as Night Boats to run between Vancouver and Victoria,B.C.They
were eventually replaced by the Pr. JOAN and the Pr. ELIZABETH, in 1930.
Like the Joan and Elizabeth, the Pr.ALICE and Pr. ADELAIDE were almost
identical, except for the more enclosed forward deck and broader funnel
on the Alice. They were not designed for speed, but for quiet, economical
night time operation. They had large dining rooms for about 200 people,
and about 95 seat cafe, with 118 staterooms, and approximately1200 day
passengers, They both were single screw, driven by a four cylinder triple
expansion steam engine.The Pr. Adelaide was the first built, by the Farifield
Shipbuilding Company in 1910. Her length 290.5 ft. width 46.1 ft. 3061
gt. She was launched on July 7, 1910, and ran her trials on September 29th.
as a coal burner, she made 17.9 knots, but in service she ran at 16 knots.
She arrived in Victoria on Dec.14,1910, and entered service on Jan.25,1911.
The
Pr. ALICE was built by Swan & Hunter Shipbuilders and launched May
29, 1911
Her
length 290.6 ft. width 46.1 ft. 3099 gt. and during her trials on
August 19,1911, she made 17.5 knots she also burned coal. She sailed from
the Tyne on
Sept. 22, 1911, and entered service Jan.17, 1912. (Coal was
the only fuel that was in good supply on their sail from the U.K., but
both Ships were converted to oil burners after there arrival at Victoria,B.C.).
Although they were mainly night boats, they both served on many other runs,
Prince Rupert -- Alaska -- Triangle and Gulf Islands.
The
Pr. ALICE was the first to be taken out of service in June of 1947 and
the Pr,ADELAIDE followed in Oct. of 1948. Both ships were purchased by
the Typaldos Brothers Steamship Co. of Greece. Pr. ADEDLAIDE was renamed
"ANGELICA" and left Victoria Sept. 17, 1949. The Pr. Alice was renamed
"AEGAEON" left Victoria on Nov. 19, 1949. After 38 years of service in
British Columbia waters. After many more years of service in the
Mediterranean, they were boyh scrapped in Italy, the ALICE in 1967, and
the ADELAIDE in 1968.

The Pr. CHARLOTTE was
built in Scotland by the Fairfield Company, and was launched and
christened by Mrs. R. Marpole,
on June 27, 1908. She was 3844 Gt.-
Length 330 ft.- Width 46.7 ft. First class berths for 280 as well as 1500
day passengers, with a dining lounge
seating 133 people. She was twin screw with four
cyl. triple expansion reciprocating steam engines, and six Scotch marine
boilers. This gave her a service speed of 20 knots. |
| PRINCESS CHARLOTTE Sailed
from Scotland on Nov. 2, 1908, with Capt.Clarence Troop, she made the 15000
mile voyage Via the Strait of Magellan in 58 days,
and arrived in Victoria on December 30, 1908. She
went into regular service between Victoria and Vancouver on January
12, 1909 under command of Captain T.O.Griffin. In the early part
of April the same year she joined the PRINCESS VICTORIA
on the Vancouver - Victoria, B.C. - Seattle, Washington Triangle Run, where
she would remain for many years. The two ships battled for speed
superiority,and overall the Pr.Victoria was a slightly faster ship. |
In 1910 PR. CHARLOTTE was one of
the first ships in the fleet to be equipped with wireless. She sailed
on almost every BCCS run during her time. In 1926 she was refurbished,
and in 1927 she started on the Alaska run for
the summer months. In 1929 under Capt. W.Q.Palmer her name was painted
on the cliffs in Skagway, Alaska

| On July 27, 1938 the Pr. Charlotte
was berthed on the east side of Pier "D" when the pier went up in flames,
she was able to clear before suffering any damage. After forty years of
B.C. Coast Service, she was retired in June 1949. She was tied up for quite
some time in Esquimalt, B.C. and like the Pr. Alice,
and Pr. Adelaide before her, was sold to Typaldos
Brothers Steamship Company, and on June 17, 1950 she sailed from Victoria
for Greece under her new name (Mediterranean) where
she underwent extensive renovations, and was hardly recognizable
with her three funnels trunked into one, and many changes to he superstructure.
She sailed the Mediterranean for 14 more years, and was finally scrapped
in 1964, at the grand old age of 55. |

TUG NANOOSE:

The "Nanoose" was built by B.C.Marine Railway
Company, at Esquimalt British Columbia, in 1908.
gt. 305 - Length 115 ft. - Width 24 ft. - Depth 15 ft.
She sailed for the C.P.R. until 1946 and was
sold for use as a breakwater. |

TUG QUALICUM:
 |
The "Qualicum" was built by Heafie & Levy,
in Philadelhia, PA in 1904 as the "Colima" Length 96 ft. Width
22 ft. - Depth 12 ft. - gt.200. She was aquired by the C.P.R. in 1911 Renamed
"Qualicum" and sailed with them until 1946 and was then sold for use as
a breakwater. |

TUG KYUQUOT

She was built by J. Crichton
& Company of Chester England, in 1919 as the "St. Florence" 419
gt.- length 135 ft. - width 29 ft. - depth 14 ft. with triple expansion
steam engine. Aquired by C.P.R. in 1924 and renamed the "Kyuquot" she was
around utill 1962 and then sold for scrap. |
