![]() Sicily '43 Campaign Notes This info below has been extracted from input by one playtester, playing the Campaign Game as the Allied player. I have edited the remarks removing from them items concerning situations that needed to be corrected in the game or the scenario during the test, but what remains I believe will give you a sense the feel of the game. The playtest was conducted blind against an Axis AI Opponent, without looking at the other side, - that is with Fog-of-War ON. Do keep in mind that in the early days of Operation Husky. there wasn't much fighting as such in some of the sectors - this isn't Normandy where the Allies had to struggle for control of the beachhead. ... and without further adue, here is what the tester had to say! ![]() Day 1 … Other than the Gela area with the HG Division ripping into me, there is not much unusual happening. I must admit that I am hard pressed in the Gela region. Cannot retreat and cannot afford the losses so soon. Day 2 This Campaign scenario seems to be unfolding as it should. The losses have been light save for the Gela region where a pitched battle with the HG Division has slowed progress inland and inflicted heavier losses proportionally to Bradleys 2nd Corps. But it has been a very interesting fight against the AI. Day 3 In the Gela region the main part of fight is all but over for the Herman Goering Division. Good fight it was though! We have a great scenario here, in fact you will be hard pressed to do better. I do admit that Bradley's 2nd Corps is shot for the time being. The 2nd Corps units need at least two days to regroup and rest. An interesting fight is also developing at Comiso. Although an Axis Kampfgruppen is now fully engaged and contained the Allies have been all day trying to gather enough force to take it on. And I've been taking losses while waiting for the other units to arrive. A small Gela in the making... As I stated earlier in my opening remark, Joss Group is making slow progress but it is starting its intended Western swing. When it gets to the town of Agrigento, I intend to split my force and send the 2nd Armored Division due north along route 118 to Palermo. I note that several heavy bridges directly along my intended route have been taken out. Are you really that devious a man or is the AI a genius? At any rate, this is great. (What can I say - the Bridges started the game intact, so if they are gone now, the AI must have done it, but maybe the scenaro designer helped it along. Either way, doesn't it sound like fun!) Many bridges are out in this area making a Allied player who plans poorly waste a lot of time an effort if he is not careful. I see the Allied human player has to realize he may need to split his engineering capability if he also wishes to split his force. Other wise somewhere down the road he may regret he did not foresee this. Too devious? or just another gem in another great game? ![]() Day 4 My impression of this scenario as a Human Allied player against the German AI so far. Very good! I seriously doubt you could do better. Day 5 In Augusta the Allies are gathering to assault the town. In the Primosole Bridge and Plains of Catania there's a big fight developing between the various groups there. All Allied traffic north has been stopped for now. At the 231 Infantry Brigade is heading north and has been effectively blocked by the Axis units by the bridges due north of its location. The 23rd Armour has flanked the Axis force and seized the airfield. But is unable to really influence the fight any further for now. Further to the west now at the 15th Sizilien Panzer Grenadier Division is slowly being involved and I am waiting for the arrival of the U.S. 46th Infantry Division to help. And finally at the Joss Force, is making slow progress westwards. Heavy fighting has taken place here and this has resulted in almost no progress at all. I am still hoping to divide the force at Agrigento. Hope I have some help coming from some bridge engineers due to the bridges blown by the AI in this sector. That's it for now, scenario plays out very nicely. Day 6 Not much to report since the last report. All units are still trying to attain their objectives from the last report. Nothing significant progress has been made but the Joss groups Armored element has started northwards towards the islands northern coast. Day 7 Heavy fighting in the Primosole Bridge area. The victory hex at has changed hands twice now. Good AI counterattack. Note now that in the Plains of Catania area the Axis units are now well spread out. Bradley's 2nd US Corps is badly spread out now. It is to regroup and head northwards to the Enna area. British 30th Corps will also regroup and head northwards to assist British 13th Corps on drive to Messina. Joss Force has split and is finding it a real slow go to the west. Route 115 to the islands western areas has been well defended by the AI. I have had to fight for every kilometer. ![]() Day 8 Not much to add to previous remarks... looks real good and plays like a dream. Now if you are not convinced that the game plays well, then here are some early commnets from other people, Non-Testers and their Comments!
